How to run a tach?

Postby LOMOFO » Tue Oct 19, 2004 8:27 pm

Hey,
I am just finishing off the final touches of converting a 4agze out of an ae101 levin into my ae101 corolla wagon, that was running a 4afe and have run into a problem with having no tacho.

I have been told the original tacho will not run with the new motor because the 4afes use a dizzy and the gzes have coil packs, and because it has twin coil packs i cant hook up an aftermarket tach either (because it sparks like a two cylinder)

I have also heard that i could run an in dash tach by getting the guage cluster from a levin but i dont really want to do this. So can anyone tell me if there is anyway i can re-wire my original tach to the new motor so i can actually see how many revs i am pulling? any ideas would be awesome

Cheers :)

You should be able to run an aftermarket tacho, like an autometer etc you will just have to probably purchase a tacho wiring adaptor/harness. There is plenty of multi coil stuff out there that runs aftermarket tacho's. I think a mitsubishi adaptor has been mentioned on here before as a cheaper alternative to the autometer/msd etc ones.

There are other ways of hooking a tacho up, but some of them are quite invovlved while the option above is the easiest.

I will look further into getting a wiring adaptor but does anyone here know exactly how to hook up wiring to original tach as i would prefer to use the original one instead of it sitting there doing nothing

we are talking about a small unit that when wired to incepted the input to your coils then converts into a signal that your factory tacho can operate with
