What to do with my fx

Postby toyrota mota » Fri Nov 12, 2004 3:33 pm

Ok my 86 fx-gt has got a blowen head gasket or a cracked head not sure yet going to pull the head off soon. But hopefully i should have about $2.5k to spend on it soon. What should i do, i want a stock looking fx that will surprise afew honda onwers. Was thinking turbo but i want it to last and be reliable and dont want insurance companies raping me every month. Should i get the engine rebuilt with port&polish, cams, how much will this cost? Was thinking about quadthrottles? I need some advice from people who have done this b4. Also want it to handle mint aswell? How fast am i going to get it n/a and reliable?
Thanks

Well since you say that you have around the 2.5K mark to spend I would have said get a GZE and just an oversized pulley wich will do exactly what you want it to do and you'll still have a lil $$$ afterwards aswell.

If you want to stay N/A then go for either black/silvertop and mild port grind maybe if you have enough think about a little bit more aggresive cams etc.

But definately stay with an A series motor as it will bolt straight in to chassis without much/any modification to anything at all.

I'd say stay NA and do a silvertop conversion. Blacktops are better but 3x the $$$ For 2 1/2 I'd say go silvertop and link and get it dyno tuned properly.

If staying na raise the compression and cams and a port and polish should do the trick. Maybe even a light weight flywheel.

If you want quad throttle bodies just do the 20v conversion.
The quad throttles will need an aftermarket ecu to run properly. There are issues with the tps, and they will not run on the standard computer. Fuel requirements are far less at lower revs than standard throttle, and is much greater at higher revs.

Im staying na and this is what im going.

I have a hi compression red top (small port block)10.3:1 . 272 deg cams with adjustable cam gears, lightweight flywheel, thinner head gasket, already have 2 1/4 inch exhaust.

Red top also has stronger rods and internals to the blue top. So would the 20v.

Also there is the throttle in a bottle, NOS. Could go for a wet system 50-75 hp.

Its all up to choice.

Thanks guys
Looks like n/a is the ways, i didnt really trust a turboed bluetop neways. 20v conversion you say, i was under the impression that they werent that great and that the 16v had more potential. 20v are just a straight bolt in, do they bolt straight up to the box in the fx? Will i need a cert? Oh does anyone know of someone here in tauranga that knows there shit with 4ages?

You'd be on the money finding a front cut from a silvertop powered car (even like a ceres or those other funny corolla things) then you'll have the loom, engine, drivetrain etc..

It's a lot of work.... I've looked at doing it for my old FX and in the end I just exclaimed "Balls to that" and bought a new 16V

You can't go too wrong with intake, exhaust (including headers) and maybe a lightened flywheel.

Someone was selling a '20v conversion kit' for an fxgt, think it was MetalUpYoAss.
Included the engine, ecu, mounts etc.

Just do a search
