lightened Flywheel...

Postby Inane » Wed Dec 01, 2004 2:56 pm

How much weight do you actually save by getting a lighter flywheel?

or is it that because the flywheel is lighter its easier for the engine to turn it?

The main advantage is from moving the weight from the outside to the center of the flywheel and centrifugal force...

Definately worth doing but if you've got some extra coin get a custom made one.

My brothers CRx goes much harder with the lighter flywheel and he only had it machined with nothing cut out of it.

he lost a couple of kilos.
And it is because it makes it easier for the engine to turn it, increases the responsiveness of the engine (acceleration and deceleration) quite a bit.

but a lightened flywheel can make daily driving more difficult.

the engine revs faster but it also loses revs faster, so you have to be careful when you're moving off or you'll stall it.

something to think about if you do a lot of driving in traffic I suppose

oh, but I guess if you have an auto it wouldn't matter?

Autos don't have a flywheel?

The problems you described would only really manifest with extremely modified or lightened flywheels.... It wouldn't take you long to adjust though.

with the driving in traffic, its very much a minor - the only real problem with having a light flywheel is that you'll loose engine momentum under heavy load (up hill for example, the engine has to work harder to keep the revs up as the momentum of the flywheel isn't what it used to be)

With taking off (having spent a week or two driving round in distrb's little ae82 with flywheel) you just have to give it a few more revs to get the momentum up before clutching out.

definately worth doing if you have the pingas and if you do have the pingas then get a heavy duty pressure plate and new clutch plate at the same time and get them matched/faced properly and you will definately notice the difference...

i personally woudnt bother. Ive heard some storys with the danger in lightened flywheels, infact, some clutch places will refuse to lighten them due to the risk.

and chickenman, auto's DO have a flywheel. Its a little different to manual flywheels. Its what the torque converter is bolted to

aaah, no they dont, they have flexi plates. Dont bother with machining your flywheel, unless you like the idea of shrapnel piercing your legs at very high speeds. Personally, I'd say that lightened flywheels are a bit of a waste on the road.

The gains in a light car are significant though.

Pretty much every car on the road is a bit of a waste, for road use.

All you hard dudes worried about a bit of shrapnel :?

accually no, id be more worryed about it disconnecting from the crank and amputating me.

and DR-X, yes they have flexi-plates, BEHIND the "flywheel" I think your somewhat confused. I know id be worryed if my torque converter was bolted to the flexi-plate!

you should knw this, YOU HAVE AN AUTO! remember?

Hey oldskoolboy have you ever seen an automatic transmission? Well it appears you havn't if you think they have flywheels. The torque converter bolts to the flexi plate and thats it.

When I was looking at getting one I was quoted $80 to lighten it and $200 to ballance it.
The ballancing was only going to be that expensive cos they diddnt have a 4age crank to ballance it on and therefore would have to ballance my crank and use that.

Cost me $170inc to get it lightened and cost me $76inc to balance with pressure plate on fly wheel.

Never had one of my fly wheels balanced with the crank before.
GZE ones are a recessed fly wheel their for very hard to lighten from what I have found out.
I did a 4age one years ago now and cost me about $400 for everything but they halved the weight of that one. Only able to take off 1.2 kg’s on GZE one.

gze flywheel is consderably lighter than the n/a counterparts
over 1kg i belive

for 500 dollars and a bit of effort finding a machinest that will do a homer
you will prolly get a cnc machined one off to you specs item

:D

um yeh ^_^

why would a v8 need a 7kg flywheel?

so he can take his foot off the throttle and hold rpm for 5 minutes, THATS RIGHT :).
