What diff ratio are you ae86 guys running? (other specs too)

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Tue Dec 28, 2004 12:49 pm

At the mo im running the standard 4.3:1 which isn't all that good with the gze because it gets thru the revs in the no go >5500rpm too fast.

I've got a spare 4.1:1 which isn't lsd (neither are) which should give it a bit more for the torque to work with.

So yea, out of interest what are you guys running? (n/a, sc or turbo)

My car:
- 4agze MAP 10-11psi
- 4.3 open diff
- w55 gbox
- 15" with 195/50's

Feels like it needs longer gearing.

wanna swap your 4.3 ( if your 4agze hasnt hammered it yet) Ive got a a few 4.1's and 3.9's around. Have you looked at going hilux yet? its a cheap way to get lsd's once you have set it up

I have a 3.9 open diff that would probably suit your car well. I also have a couple of LSD's for sale too. 8)

yeah, with big power you can run a taller diff for more top end.
Depends what you're doing..... we're slowly finding out good ratios for the track.....

atm, puke for instance would be 4th gear 7000rpm i think start.. with 4.3...
but with a 4.8 that i'm putting in, I think I'll go 5th with 6500rpm or so.. haven't really worked it out

But, i'm not sure what i'm going to do at manfield.... as i haven't had a setup that's comparable to now recently, so i might 7000rpm 4th it with 4.8....

taupo is a complete unknown.

also, with big power and short diff, you'll smoke bags more, like, you'll get 3rd happening easier on 2->3 chop. :)

i run 4agze with w-58, G series 4.3 lsd, 195/50/15, 4.3 is quite verstile, although for fun i would like to try a 4.8, but once i get around 15 pound i would think that 4.1 would be very good as you could get some good smoke, with the 4.3 i can rev cut down the back straight at puke in 5th so if you griping i wouldnt want any lower, although mine makes most power from about 5500rpm up

Yeah all the power above 5500 with sc! Thats unheard of, well sort of  my car hits the ol' brick wall at 5500.

Im using my car for grip racing, havent really got the dosh for drifting not that it stops me from hanging out on the odd corner :P . I plan on going turbo at some stage but I want to do a few more events with the s/c as it is now. Hopefully the 4.1 would be a good compromise for manfeild, i guess i'll see.

Hey gdsup, do you ever have overheating problems on the track with the supercharger in high revs? I was at manfeild the other weekend and after 6 or so laps the engine got really hot, im assuming its because the supercharger acts like a heater at over 6000 revs. im using a much bigger radiator than standard but its not as wide as those diesel corolla ones you guys seem to use.

I've always had trouble getting the thermostat to work properly. Its in a housing halfway along the bottom hose which isn't the best place to have it but i cant fit it in the top hose which would be more accurate.

The guy that did my conversion reckoned the thermostat needed a small hole in it to get the hot water on the right side to work properly.... this never worked properly and was always cold. I tried different thermostat's with higher heat settings and also tried smaller hole (tiny). I've got it so it holds the temp at half way on the gauge at road speeds, but it still takes ages to get up to temp. I think a might try it without the hole to see if the guy was talking shit.

Where do you have your thermostat housing?

my radiator cap has 0.9 on it, i'm assuming that is in "bar". single core radiator with one electric fan and std topmount intercooler.

checking your thermostat might be a good idea. not sure wat my plugs are. platinum's, same as standard.

ye ive heard a couple of people using diesel carrolla radiators cause they were a little bigger, sure it mite take a little longer to heat up but as long as its not running way under operating temp all the time thats ok ?

also NZ_AE86 ive asked you a few times about those lsds you have for sale but sadly each time ive almost had the cash something else has crapped itself and has been needed, also if you still have both for sale i was trying to suss a mate to get the other one so i can try a deal to take them both of you, but sadly about 2 weeks ago an isuzu big horn on the wrong side of the road going around a blind corner gave me a little nudge so as soon as panel shops re open that is my next bill :(

but good luck with the sale still i dont think youll have any trouble and hopefully you still have one or two when i finally get the cash
If you drink, and drift,

I have a twin core custom thing, not really anything great, with just a small ae92 electric fan, seems to be fine had alot of troubles with leaks when i first got the car, i use the ae92 gze housing which is mounted on the side of the block with a standard thermostat, will try to get a photo of how it works next time i have the s/c off, most off time one the track i forget to turn the fan on, its only when i come to a stop it heats up, then i switch the fan on, i dont run heater core atm either, but generally im not tapped 100% for more than a few minutes at a time
