Strange noise on startup.

Postby rettun » Thu Dec 30, 2004 12:02 am

Hey, when I start my car it sounds like its running without oil... for about 3-5 seconds then it comes right.

Yes, i have checked oil :)

What could be the cause of it, its worrying ?

Any help would be appreciated, or does anyone know of a mechanic(who knows their stuff) that I could take it too?

Thanks Josh.

Sorry, the car is a Pulsar Autech(nissan:$),
80,000km and having a nosey this morning theres a small squeek comming from the belts, and a friend said it could be the cams?

Hmmm, waitin to hear back from a mate to go see his mechanic but yeah...

if it is oil pressure, is it bad? And how come its gotten worse in the last few days?

Would be due for a cam belt change if it hasn't had one but noise that gets worse aint a good sign... don't drive it if you can help it until someone ontoit has a look/listen.

Does your oil light stay on longer than usual when you start up?

The oil light goes out straight away and after that few seconds the car runs fine like no funny noises... :/

I thought cambelts got done around every 100,000? The car's got lumpy cams if that makes any difference?

All depends how you drive it... and how it has been driven by past owners.

its probably just slow oil delivery to the cams and rockers.

might be caused by

worn oil pump
worn crank or big end bearings
partially blocked cam sahft oil manifold pipe
buggered oil filter (anti drain back valve not working)
Alcohol, The cause of and solution to all lifes problems.

Import, last guy had it for over a year and did most services himself and through his mate at nissan(so he said but had quite a few bits and peices to support his story) not to sure how he drove it, but i drive it pretty nicly, only really pushed the revs up past 5500 a few times(redline 7500)

As for lifters, im not sure what type it has(still learning about engine) autech's are very hard to find ANYTHING on the most info I found was on a nissan performance mag and said...

"I am about to purchase a ‘97 Pulsar Autech Version and have had a little trouble trying to find specs for it so I was wondering if you could give me a summary of its exact horsepower on the crank and wheels and also if you would know what Autech had modified on the engine itself as well."

Aftermarket tuner Autech keeps a tight lip on the specific engine mods they use for the SR20DE to get it to 180 crank horsepower at 6800 rpm (roughly 155 wheel hp) and 141 ft lbs of torque at 5600 rpm. The naturally aspirated SR20DE includes a 60mm performance exhaust, exclusive ECU reprogramming, 11:1 compression ratio, JDM stainless manifolds, forged pistons, bigger cams (close to a JWT S3 or S4), and modified valve timing. They also equipped the car with custom brakes, fully adjustable suspension and front and rear stabilizers, as well as a fairly wild body kit

Mines only the 1.8 version(according to the plate) but im guessing they did the same mods to the engine? or it could be the 2L? :/

Getting oil/filter change hopfully tomorow and all other lubricants checked.. have a choice of magnitec or shell helix ultra(the grey/silver bottle) which one to use?

will have to ask about the other three Trouserfxgt as i dont know how to check them...

i dont know if they would go that far for the 1.8 >.>

that 2.0L sounds like it would absoutly carve up >.>

2.0 making 180hp from factory is pretty good really, espeicaly non turbo, that thing will take to mods like a duck to water :).

and that silver oil bottle, isnt that like 5w-30 or something?

5w is very very light... isnt that made for porshe etc? not really a nissian >.> i dont suggest it, the *more ultra* the oil dosnt mean the better >.>

10w 30 is the lowest id go with that, which is probably still to light, maybe go for a 15w 40?

did you check the oil once it was warm or at cold?

try checking the oil, before you startup in the morning.

Talking to the mechanic about it when I got the oil changed, was asking the mechanic and he said anything 5 to 10w 40 should be alright so I guess it should be alright to use.

His thoughts on the noise were jus the self addjusting tappets?

Seems to be alot less with the magnitec in there, which i think is deff a good sign.

Thanks guys
