Soarer - is there anything i should know about these things?

Postby R15 » Mon Jan 03, 2005 11:20 am

im keen on buying a soarer, but dont know a grea deal about them and have never driven one, so ill ask a few questions b4 i leap.

firstly, which is better, the 2.5tt or the V8 (im not interested in the other one)

what sort of km/l of fuel do you get out of the v8?

im mostly keen on the v8, is it very quik?

is there anything expensive that shags out frequently on these motors / cars?

are they quite boaty to drive or are they stiff?

what does active air bag suspension mean?

i have only test driven a v8 one, but i must say i was rather impressed.
the 2.5l tt one is more powerful and supposed to be quicker, but it all depends on what you want.

The v8 would be better suited for cruising in my opinion.

the 2.5l tt one has easy hp on tap (boost increase etc)

but the v8 you could convert to twin turbo and be away laughing.

i would go for the v8 with a decent intake and exhaust (twin side pipe set up) adjust the cam timing and be happy with the 300plus hp and the torque that goes with it.

Dude, please get the 2.5TT, it shits on the V8. 1JZ-GTE is the second best motor to ever come from Japan, and is probably more econonmical off-boost too. Apparently the brakes are much bigger as well. You will not regret it. For every dollar you spend upgrading it you will get twice as much power over the V8 model as well.

I aggre with Dc on this one i would strongly recommend the tt its much quicker i think 6 s to 100 vs 7.5 for the v8.... plus im pretty sure the tt's suspension set up is better than the v8's.

i looked at one, but it would only be for a daily driver

i looked at putting a 1uzfe into my car before i did the 7mgte conversion.

I have a lot of respect for the 1uz.

awesome engine.

Id like to see a 1jz handle 900hp without opening it up

Agreed.

Firstly....1JZ is definately not the 2nd best motor ever to come from Japan. I can name a handful of motor's better than this one.

Secondly......1JZ is rater more horsepower than the 1UZ yes but it's only about 20hp or so so not a hell of allot.

Thirdly......Suspension on the Z30 series Soarers all depends on exactly what kind of soarer you buy. Some of them roll out with TEMS and some don't. It's optional in all of them so if you don't want a Soarer with TEMS then don't buy one.

The brakes between the UZZ and the JZZ are exactly the same. If there is any difference it would be really tiny.

And DC 'for every dollar you spend upgrading it you will get twice as much power over the V8 model as well'......this is an absolute bullshit statement. Have you ever tuned or played around with either of these 2 motors?

Don't make silly comments if you can't back it up with any sort of legitimate evidence...

Were you trying to spell "amateurs"?

My brother has owned both models - so I have played round with them. You go spend $1000 on a 1UZ, (extractors, filter, whatever - 1k won't do much) I'll go get a 3" exhaust, pod filter and wind up the boost on my 1JZ - do you really think you'd still have 20hp less??.

I havn't personally spent hours dyno'ing either, I doubt many have, but I have driven many of both types and have helped modify 2 TT's and 1 V8, and I stand by what I said. Anyone interested in performance should get a 2.5 TT unless they plan to spend tens of thousands on the motor, in which case it might be 50/50 between it and a 1UZ.

ok so my spelling was abit out, but really, what a dick.

there are too many probablys and apparantlys in your posts.

how much does a 1jz weigh?

1uz weighs 197kgs

And how long will he own the 1jz before the turbos start to smoke?

i know of 4 1jzs that suffered smokey turbo syndrome. im yet to hear of a weakness for the 1uz.

dont get me wrong i think the 1jz is still a very good engine.

But hey, if realible grunt isnt your thing, who am i to comment?

10s of thousands on a 1uz?

what a load of shite.

exhaust
intake
twin turbos
intercooler/s

and you are already on your way to making huge power.

Deaf is right, you have no idea how powerful the 1uz is. Its the most over worked engine in toyotas history, according to zoom magazine.

They use them in jet boats with twin turbo setups, they bolt superchargers directly onto them, with no compression change.

they go for 500+km's still humming along like the day you brought them.

the 1uz is one of the best, if not the best engine toyota has ever made :). DONT CRACK IT.

Speaking of th 1UZ... there is one for sale at Acadamy Toyota Wreckers in CHCH. Said he sells them for $1000.

I wonder if I could fit it in to my AW11??? 8O

I've also owned both the TT and V8 soarer...

IMO the TT is quicker off the mark but on the open road i found my V8 to be quicker.

V8 had full twin exhaust (dyno'd at 142kw/wheels on 29 degree day)... TT had half exhaust, pod, fuel controller which wasn't tuned... (never dyno'd)

The V8 is a much smoother, more relaxed ride... and with an exhaust was fun pulling onto motorway onramps, holding in second at 80km/h. Bang.. nail it and it was over into the right hand lane and into third...

The TT on the other hand seemed abit more like a performance car but wasn't much quicker if at all.

Yes the brakes are bigger on the TT as its apparently a good upgrade on the V8...

I'm actually looking at buying another soarer soon to do up. Still havent decided what model to go with yet but a manual and some serious 'goodies' will definetely be on the cards.

My 2c.
