you sure they are both completely stock?

eg if yours has aftermarket headers you dont know, that will be your culprit etc.

just be certain they are both stock. and as vvega said, do compression test :)

exactly. Timing makes all the difference to them.

And do you both run the same fuel?

if none of the other suggestions clear anything up.....

i'd be checking the vvt solenoid wiring and solenoid, if that seems to be working fine then check the pulley for seizure. it is also possilbe the oil gallery to the pulley could be blocked as to the poor state that some of those engines come into the country. (lack of servicing)

the vvt gives you your bottom end torque & power

Could possibly advance it a couple of degrees if ya like for a lil more low down power and response if your running higher rated gas like 98 but hey cant really go wrong with the stock settings.

Try advanced timing, if you're pinging too much, go back to stock.

i do doubt advancing the timing past the stock setting will net any gain, the ignition map will already be optimised from the factory to be run on 100 pump gas from japan and guess what, your only getting 96

I actually found on my blacktop that retarding the timimg by 2 or 3 degree's made it perform better.
I put it down to the fact that it's better to loose a couple of degree's of advance than let the knock sensors drop it back by 6 or so.
