shortening shocks

Postby low_rider » Fri Jan 14, 2005 3:50 pm

what exactly gets done when you take your shocks to be shortened do they jus cut down the middle part(cant remember the name of it) and re thread it.

i was talking to my old man about this and he reckons if thats all they do he could do it himself, this would be legal if i certed it right?

properly done, yes, they cut a bit off the pistion rod/shaft and re-thread it. remember it is hardened steel, so may be more difficult to work than he expects, however if he has a lathe, go nuts. certifiable? yes.

I agree. They barely lower the car, even superlows aren't that much off factory, but they have quite a nice firm ride.. the cobras I have now lower the front nicely, but it's like driving a jelly donut, I keep bottoming out, same goes for lovells. Best results I've seen are custom superlows with custom-made shocks, nice ride, HEAPS of travel.. if you're after better, you need to go coilovers. Meh.

I got my Corona lowered in Newmarket at the place by MacMillan BMW that used to be the Shock Shop. They replaced all the shocks and got custom springs for the front of the car (simple 2" blocks for the rear), the car is now as low as it can be whilst retaining a ride that is better than stock, heck it's as good as a new car!
