GT-T Air Induction - Pod or Pad?

Postby Santa'sBoostinSleigh » Mon Jan 17, 2005 8:08 pm

Herd a few different (conflicting) opinions on whats the best set up for GT-T Caldina air intake systems
Pod or Pad?
At the mo i got a (pretty scummy looking) K&N pad filter in mine, all in standard air box.
Whats better?

My GT-T backfires lots.. mmm sounds good, but is it bad??

see profile/link for pic/mods etc

i have a panel filter in mine and it breathes much better now can notice the fuel economy diff too!dont see the point in having a pod filter ,they suck too much hot air.just modify the current air intake to get more fresh air and your away.imo that is ,im sure youll get many more opinions soon.

If your spark plug gap is wider than the standard, It may have chance to have bad back fire. It will use more fuel and less power. :)
Of course, there should have some other reasons.

Does it do it when you lift the throttle? If so then the most likely cause is and air leak in you exhaust manifold, or it's running lean (or possibly rich) on the overrun.

Mine backfires on the overrun, but due to the exhaust system it sounds more like it's farting  Actually I've notice a lot of 3S-GTE's do the same when you do the filter and exhaust mods, my MR2 is the same, though I can really make it backfire by playing around with the settings on the Motec, even got flames out the exhaust once

Plug gap should be 0.8mm (0.7mm for 16PSI+)

I have a Blitz pod filter on mine, but I'm going to change it back to standard as I haven't got time to make a cold air box and I don't like it's filtration. Other than better intake/BOV sound theres' not much extra performance to be gained from a pod filter on an otherwise stock engine.

it does it when i lift my foot and then put it down again, and on fast boosting gear changes.
sounds nice i rekon, but yeah if its decreasing performance it needs to stop lol!

I get flames when my foot is to the floor and my reaction is slightly slow with a gear change so it bounces the limiter once or twice before the change, it does the funky Fast and the Furious flame out the exhaust type stuff.

mine is a bit past 7k rpm
although that is in first and second (haven't hit it in anything higher...)

But if you shifted your gear stick (in the auto) to sit in 1st or second you could probably go higher (and blow your engine up)

as far as boost, its something like 12-13 in first and second then 13-14 in third and fourth.

I'm sure Fivebob can probably give you exact figures... or to save fivebob the time, do a search of the forum.. the info is there!

Rev limit is 7000 or very close to it. Discovered that on my test drive, with the salesman in the passengers seat, so I don't know whats taking you so long.

Stock boost level is 0.95 Bar, with fuel cut at around 1.4Bar.

Speed limit, don't know the only time I tried was when I had to HKS F-ConS installed, which removed the speed limiter, haven't bothered since but I'd suspect it to be around the 200km/h mark or 5500rpm in 5th on a manual.

hey dude bang the battery into the boot and get some silicon hose peice of 3 inch stainless pipe and a pod filter and make yourself up a cold air box best way to go u dont get enough air with the standard filter there is only i think one litle duct that runs to it. mine also backfires due to the exhuast setup will be fixed shortly and ive taken up to 200 on the motorway a couple of times and inane how do u no yours throws out flames when u change gears do u have some one follow you or something or have u setup some mirrors on the back so u can see the exhuast. oh and rev limit is set at 7250 well thats wot mine does anyway roughly and thats wot i read somewere and are there any caldinas racing at the nats im taken mine down to race should have a round 230kws at the wheels 310 hp mainly so i can get on the pit side to see the rest of the cars but will do a bit of racing see how far i get also does anyone no if i can take the back seats out or not for the nats.

do you have a VTA BOV? That will often cause backfires on gear changes, due to running rich between gears.
