Machining brake rotors

I am going to put some ebc green stuff brake pads on the front of my aw11 next week, should I get the rotors machined?

I have it done before on previous cars of mine when changing brake pads but that has usually been because there were small grooves worn into the rotor just through general wear, and also, on another occasion because the brake pedal was juddery(is that even a word?) meaning that the rotors were probably slightly warped. The rotors on the mr2 however look and feel fine to me.

So, should I get them machined anyway or will they be sweet?

I have heard that after having rotors machined, you shouldn't then put your new high performance pads straight in, you should bed them in a bit with the old pads and then put the new pads in, is this true?

Anyone know where is the best/cheapest place to get rotors machined in Hamilton? I think last time it cost me about $50 for two rotors at Apex (seems expensive).

the dudes 1 wack c**t but he does a good job, hes mobile too.

i think its along the lines of "waikato mobile brake something something"

Just a quick question : can you have factory rotors slotted if they're new enough instead of buying aftermarket slotted rotors?

Look up the part number for your car under Toyota, then take the part number to Super Cheap Auto and request that part. Have discovered that a friend who did this got a pair of Brembo slotted front disks for his Cortina for NZ$90!

I'm heading to SCA on my lunch break today to ask how much a set of new disks for my 185 will cost :)

If your discs are in good condition, ie not grooved, you shouldn't machine them, as there is a minimum thickness for your discs, and you shouldn't go under this, if you do it is extremly dangerous. Machining your brakes too often will bring your discs to the minimum thickness fast.

All IMHO of course, but EBC Green Stuff are absolutely cr@p. Wouldn't even put them on my push bike. They may produce less dust than other pads, but they certainly can never be classed as a decent pad - even less so if you are after something that is a good 'performer'.

That's why you buy new disks when they go under the minimum thickness, but his car is a light car with not much weight in the front so it shouldn't chew through the disks too much so they're probably fine but the place machining them will tell him if they need replacing or not.

GT4 20 - I'm very curious... what part of the performance of EBC Greenstuff don't you like?
My experience:
Cold - poor braking action, lots of pedal effort needed.
Warm/Hot - very good, good feel, no fade.
Not really suitable for a daily driver, but great for the track.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I was reccomended green stuff by an experienced member of the mr2 club who has much trackday experience.

I am not disputing your experiences 'GT4 20' with greenstuff, but could you please be a bit more specific with what you dont like about them, conditions, usage etc?

Also 'GT4 20', could you please provide me with details of what you consider a better performing pad with a similar price tag?

As mentioned before ... went to SCA and asked about the part number in regards to my car (ST185 Celica), and a PAIR of performance slotted front rotors will set me back $143!

*starts saving*

I'll let you know when they arrive, and whether or not they're worth the investment :)

Hey Lanius that's cheap for brand new slotted rotors!! Do they have to come ex-Aus and how long will you have to wait?
I hope you realise that there's 2 different sizes of St185 rotors, one for widebody single calliper and one for jdm normal body twin calliper, and DBA being an Aus co. will prob only make the rotors for the widebody as that was the only model they got, should've measured yours first and compared the dimensions to that of the part catalogue.
Ps. What SCA branch did you go to?
