Extractors for my FWD ae92 levin (4age)

Postby LEVIN GTV » Sat Jan 22, 2005 4:59 am

Hey guys,

in the process of organising an exhaust system for my ae92 levin which has a jdm 4age.

ive decided to go cat back 2" mandrel with a cannon. But i was wondering whether it was worth investing in a set of extractors aswell, and then getting the piping done from the extractors or headers back.

My engine is completly stock at the moment, and i plan to follow the path of intake, cams etc down the track.
- Is it worth getting extractors?

Ive seen that bill sherwoods sprinter is still running the stock exhaust manifold, and that he stock manifold is fine for power up to 170hp.

If i did get a set of extractors, which would best suit my ae92 fwd levin?

Ive heard 20v extractors are the best of an ae101/111 but not sure about their application with my engine.

What sort of difference would a set of extractors make in comparison to my exhaust manifold when getting a new exhaust system? would i expect to gain any more HP if i did add a set of extractors and make the piping flow on, rather than just a cat back system?

Thanks guys, any help is greatly appreciated. Please share your experiences with extractors etc, or atleast point me in the right direction.

Cheers

extractors WILL give you a power gain over any factory cast iron manifolds.
as for the 20v i think from memory they are extractors anyway (steel tubing) so you should be fine with them and just go from cat back and could even look for a high flowing cat aswell.

actually the stock manifold on the 16v is very good aswell, quite ahrd to improve on, id go with the 20v ones, or keep the stock ones and lengthen the secondarys to 500mm

and even if the gain is only slight its just letting it breathe better and gives it a much nicer tone also gets rid of the twang that alot of gt carollas get

Don't cam later on unless your going for big power numbers. Get 4-1 Extractors for outright power and in combination with the cam you should make a nice HP number. Just don't expect it to be driveable

4-2-1 off 20V's are the go. You may need to heat wrap them as I don't know if the heat shield off the ae92 model will fit ae101. I'd heat wrap anyway. If you wanna go nuts heat wrap all the pipes then pack it will pink bats and put the heat shield over it to hold it all together.

I always recommend cat back exhausts as oppose to header back. The cat does a very good job of lowering emitions. I've heard of people using catalytic converters off commodores and falcons however I haven't seen any posted results on their effectivness.

Ive got access to some 20v extractors, professionally redrilled to suit a 16v.

If i got them put on, should i get the exhaust from the headers or keep the pipe stock from the extractors, then from the cat get the 2" mandrel?

Also, would the 20v extractors be ok if i went to a 4agze?

And would the 2" exhaust be too small if i went 4agze?

Cheers guys, thanks for the info

2" - 2.5" is about the right size for 4age/4agze. Smaller size for street but larger for big power while sacifising low end torque.
