hell do you get out rounded off bolts? I have one last bolt to get out before I can pull my turbo off, and some $&#$% monkey has rounded it off?
Its very easy to get at with spanners and whathave you, but Im stumped for ideas and I need to get it ot this afternoon!!!

Any help is appreciated.

oh, and if anyone from Turbo tech reads this - thanks for rounding off one of the easiest to get at bolts in the entire exhaust system :?

depending on how much room you have to play with, you could always file the hex head back onto it.....or if you have a really decent pair of vice grips you could also try that....and lastly depending on how much damage you want to or don’t want to do to the bolt you could always get a slightly smaller sized socket and force it on there with a FBH :P

Use an easy out, you will probably need a cobalt drill to drill through it but thats probably the best way.

Or do it 'bro styles' and file or grind the hex back to the next size smaller spanner.

Best way is use an easy out, but keep in mind they're not usually as easy as the name would suggest :roll: What bolt is it? You could certainly try hammering on a smaller socket, I have done this before.

Will a 6pt socket still fit? Might work if it's not too stuffed, but heat it up first and then squirt some WD40 or CRC on it and leave it for a while. If that doesn't work see if you can find a supplier of Mouse Milk in NZ, that will loosen it up for sure.

If the bolt is rusted in then an Easyout is likely to break and cause you more problems :( If you can get a drill onto it then the best idea is probably to drill the head off it.

If your not fussed about loosing a bolt you could try a couple of things - both which worked for me.

depending on how tight the bolt is you could try to lock tight of weld another bolt head onto it and the undo it

or

use and old screw driver and hammer and try and tap the bolt off that way

mmm, thanks guys.

For anyone who's ever taken a turbo off an MR2, its the first bolt on the "turbine elbow" hanger, it bolts on to the block so not so keen on drilling it off. Will try some of the other suggestions though.

Nah you're only drilling the head off it so it won't even come near the block, then you remove the remainder with some vice grips. Can't see it being easy to get a drill in there anyway, so welding another head on the bolt is probably the best alternative. Don't forget to use a 6pt socket though, or you'll likley round that one off too :(

like mentioned before, it depends on where it is. you could try and get a powerful cordless drill with a decent drill bit designed for drilling through metal which is quite long and drill a hole across through the bolt head and shove a allen key through it and turn it.

how rounded is it? use a single hex socket, 6 side,

weld a nut on the rounded head, then just undo it,

or bash the next size down socket on, it,

personally unless its a snapped bolt etc dont bother drilling it,.

In the 70's they sold spanners that tightened around rounded off bolts. I've got a pair of them here.
But you can buy (or at least you could) sockets that do the same thing. Stud removers.
Or we'd use easy-outs as somebody has suggested.
I guess the solution depends on how accessable the bolt is.
Ask a mechanic at your local garage. They'll have the tool. They probably won't lend it to you. You could offer to leave a deposit.

In my day a dozen beer bought a lot of favours.
