6 month old springs sag?

Postby snwtoy » Sun Jan 30, 2005 6:47 pm

These springs I bought for the caldina off trademe - the rears sit perfectly even, but the front drivers side is a couple of cm lower than the passengers. The seller reckons they're only 6 months old.

I know that over a long period of time the springs could sag if the car was only driven with the driver in it - but I wouldn't have thought in 6 months?

No idea what brand they are, but the colour is turquoise.

Yes I have checked that the are all seated perfectly. I thought that maybe they'd come right after my drive down to meremere and back - but nope.

Any ideas?

Actually - swapping them might not be a bad idea - just to see if it makes a difference. I'll do it tomorrow as I"m pretty shattered after a very long day in the sun :)

I had a set of turquoise coloured springs in my VR4.

The brand name was Sabre.

Only prob with swapping sides with fronts is ususally the drivers side front is slightly stiffer than the other side when it comes to lowering springs. Spings will sag or sack out & settle to length once they've been compressed a set amount usually about 2/3rds of there length compressed, after they've sacked out they will not settle further. Maybe you just need a big fat person to jump in the passenger side & help it settle or maybe you've got the two fronts round the wrong way??

Yeah I will try swapping the fronts today. Maybe they are round the wrong way. I'm not a huge person.. I weigh 80 at the most (note to self - must get back into training this week)

Did you put the top spring seats on properly? because they are not symetrical

are standard springs usually harder on the drivers side too?

Cos the tyres on my ae82 would always rub on the arches when going round corners. So I put another set of standars springs in the front and now one side rubs even worse but the other side never rubs :?

The front left is on 100% perfect (doublechecked), will be checking the front right this arvo, as well as swapping them over.
I do realise they are not symmetrical at the top and went to lengths to get them sitting right so the should be fine. I can see how the car would sit higher if they were not seating the springs right, I guess it can go lower as well...
Will report back later this arvo.

I konw a lot of cars have different length/stiffness springs from factory. I pulled apart a KE36 wagon that had the passenger side spring 1/2 a coil taller, but quite a bit softer. Have heard theories about the rotational force of the engine but buggered if I know.

The most common theory, which seems to be the most likely as well, is the road camber, coupled with the fact that vehicles spend as lot of the time with just the driver, means that the drivers side has to support more weight.

They look like Dobi's to me. Not that the colour or brand has much to do with the price of fish.

After re-seating the right front corner spring, the car now sits only 3mm lower on the drivers side which is fine by me.

All's well that ends well.. but I wish I knew what I had done wrong the first time :?

Not in the end no.. I'm still buggered from yesterday - the sunscreen i put on was totally utterly crap and I got burned rather badly.

As it is I don't know if 3mm is worth the effort now.. I think I'll just leave them as is.
