Ok, say i have a 20 valve engine,

It's either VVT-i or not. If i run an altezza ecu that is VVT-i does it make the engine VVt-i, NO.

You are all on about how it switches or when it switches,
That has nothing to do with it.
An engine without an ECU is still either VVT ORVVT-i.
The computer has nothing to do with it, it's all insde the cam, pulley, and controller.

4A-GE 20V in an AW11?

This is a very tempting option that has been successfully done but has some things to watch out for. Worldwide, there are probably around 20-30 AW11s with this transplant. There are two versions of the 20V. The "silver top" motor has 165 HP with the "black top" having 170 HP, the increase coming from a different ECU along with the addition of a MAP sensor. These engines are usually imported from Japan and will bolt up directly with the C-52 transmission and with the stock motor mount locations. Getting it running however is another story.

An early decision that must be made is weather or not to use the stock 20V EFI which is sometimes very hard to get, or to use an after market EFI system. An after market system with an adjustable trigger can essentially do the same thing that the "i" in the 170 HP VVTi does. That being an adjustable triggering of the switch that changes the cam timing.

The blacktop is NOT VVT-i.
Its a simple switch. It either allows oil into a gallery to shift the intake pulley or not. EXACTLY the same as the silvertop.
I don't know where that post came from, however I suspect the original source was CLUB4AG. Where their reference pages have it INCORRECTLY noted at VVT-i. Its a misconception in regards to what intelligence is. The i, is simply a reference to a infinitely variable intake cam timing. Both 20 valves can only set the intake valve timing at one of two points (VVT on, and VVT off). If you consider the intelligence to be some form of intelligent switching, IE load and RPM, or as with both 20 valves, load, temperature and RPM (and possibly other factors) then both are intelligent. However Toyota doesn't consider this the prerequsite for calling something VVT-i and niether should you.
There was much debate several years ago on club4ag in regards to this very point. Mainly fuelled by my discovery of the differences in VVT solenoid. However note that both solenoids are simple switches!!! They CANNOT vary either the flow or pressure to the VVT pulley.

Whoever wrote that post have even got the triggering from an aftermarket ECU wrong. If they use an "adjustable trigger" they are simply switching on and off the VVT. That doesn't make it intelligent.
Its easy to prove. Supply 12 volts to a blacktop VVT solenoid, if the solenoid activates then you have VVT. If not you have a fugged VVT solinoid, AS IT’S VVT!
As an aside VVT-I must use some form of stepper motor, so it’s not a straight 12 volt supply.

have to say that the guys are right. if you plant it when the car is cold (not that i do that cept when im late for work) you get to about 4k rpm and then the vvt kicks in - kinda feels like a supercharger.

most new toyotas have vvt-i??

off topic vtec is honda's version of vvt-i?? :?:

well brett mate it doesnt make a difference really what you do as you have been beaten by a 96 celice an 85 familiar an 88 levin and a 96 integra.

and why bother buying a car that you don't understand buy something with a charger on it its a lot simpler then one that messes with its cams,

but thats just my thoughts

VVT-I changes say 4 degee advance, or 6 or whatever is required to promote torque / hp - as set into the ecu.

of course at full throttle it will slowly increase it, instead of like the blacktop and such in which will instantly chuck it to full advance.

for example, an altezza may (at full throttle from 2k rpm), advance by 5... 6... 7 degrees... as rpm rises, promoting low down torque... then at around 4k rpm suddenly increase it to 15 degrees etc :).

VVT is either 0 degree advance, or 15... thus no inteligince.

Do you say Q basic has inteligence?
