4-2-1 Extractors or 4-1? Pros and Cons?

Postby LEVIN GTV » Thu Feb 10, 2005 4:06 am

Hey guys,

Im looking at some extractors for my 4age. Ive passed the 20v extractors on my 16v and going to get some custom ones made up.

Basically im not to sure whether to go with 4-2-1 or 4-1?

What are the pros and cons of each???

Any help would be appreciated

I'm not 100% sure on this but...
I heard 4-1 give slightly better top end performance, and 4-2-1 give better low end performance when compared to each other.

yup 4-2-1 gives better midrange, so thats what you want on a road car.
the stock ones are really good, hard to improve on them.
so its a 16v? why not use the 20v ones??? the are excellent.
even the stock 16v ones are damn good. unless youv spent a lot on the engine you wont find any gains there....

So will the 20v ones give any gain over the standard 16v manifold? or is it just that they look a bit better and are lighter

i beleive they are better.
on a modded engine they will help. but i havnt seen any dyno figures...
i wouldnt expect a dramatic increase.
lets put it this way... if i had a 16v id fit 20v extractors

My mates just reccently changed from some 4-2-1 to a 4-1 set of extractors on his heavily modded Honda Civic. He made 28 HP at the wheels!!!  That's some crazy $hit man...

Why can't we get insane gains like that??? :( :( :(

Yeah that's what I thought, but they were a very good set of extractors to start with.
His car had done a 12.8 at Meremere. Now he's getting a Link installed and tuned and see what she's good for after that hike in power...
It's a crazy ass car!!!

A Honda needs all the help it can get.

BTW, I got close to 25hp gain with a good set of headers on my 16v

Yes would be interested to know what headers you used on your car!

Basically im in two minds what i want, i mean i would love top end power, and the sound of 4-1, but my mind also tells me that i should go 4-2-1 as they are for more road use.

I CANT DECIDE!

$10 says that without the help of a dyno graph, you wouldnt tell the difference.

yes im also down the extractor path.

Im pondering custom made, ive got the fabrication sorted at work. But want to research a little more about split pusling, and length tuning with a cammed engine.

Is mig welding suitable? Ive heard stainless steel expells less heat, but will have to be tig welded. That rules that s/s as i only have mig at work, so Im planning to use steam pipe.

Whats a good tube diameter? or will it vary slightly with such modifications as raised c/r, increased valve duration, flow rates etc? (na) Also collector diameters?

any other things to think about? thanx

ok ill make this easy
extractor lenght is based off cam timming
stainless is fine
steam tube is good for turbos!!!
titanium is good to but is a cock to weld
mild steal bought in u bends is your easyiest option

4:1 is easier to build and tune
4:2:1 is harder to tune and get right

so get all ya cam details togethier
work out your port lenght
and go from there
