2005 spells the start of a new project car...
take one Grandad owned AE85 3A-U auto for $600
Add a silvertop 20v 4AGE for $700 (with fwd gearbox which will be sold...)
And a T50 gearbox with 4A bellhousing for $250

This is going to be our first engine swap (ie not just straight replacement)
Has anyone got any advice at all?
After a bit of investigation it sounds like the distributor position is going to be a bit of a challenge...
Any experience/links would be much appreciated and i'm sure I'll get to know y'all better in the future

I'm pretty sure you also have to change the rear brakes from the drum setup to the 86 disc setup for it to get a cert!

I have the feeling there's something else as well but I can't remember..... Anyone?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Ah yes cert....well we'll get the engine/gearbox in first before we get too worried with cert! The disc rear/LSD is obviously desirable, but at the moment we haven't found one...if anyone has one feel free to PM me
In Dunedin there is/was a DX rolla with 3sgte (and cert) but still the standard brakes...including drums obviously, as far as I'm aware as long as your car can handle a few stops from 100km/h that's enough for cert?

Why would you need the rear brakes upgraded for a cert?

Cert requires your car to complete a certain No. of stops from, I think, 100kph, 6 stops back to back rings a bell. but either way factory AE85 brakes are up to it! Although AE86 brakes are required for any track work. :)

Sweet that was what I was hoping, I haven't had much (ANY) experience with cert so it's nice to know this stuff!

I guess you might need to upgrade the rear brakes IF your car was putting on the pounds ie 2JZGTE into your KE10, along with lead sound deadening....

As long as you got Ventilated fronts you shouldn't need to worry about the rears for the cert. Definately suggest it though, especially for racering.

i believe for the brakes, they do 0-100 then stop, 0-100 then stop and then on the third time thats the one that matters.

as long as the engine isnt significantly heavier than the standard one, you shouldnt have too many issues.

But for peace of mind, might pay to get better brake pads and fluid.

you can get decent compound put onto your drum shoes as well

The one with the white stripe over the bonnet? That is long gone, the current owner (although it is/was for sale, so he may not be the owner anymore) posts on here under the name DEVILE.

Cheers for that, at the next agm we'll discuss the disc rear end...t'will be good to get back to Dunedin so I can stop 'working' and start uni...and start disassembling/reassembling this project!
From a resale prospect are we better off doing this 20v conversion, or being a bit different and modding the 3A? We can get cost parts at Repco, so the 3A would basically get reconned/recammed etc. etc. or is it really the boat anchor that it has been described as ?!

Something I'm more concerned about for cert (potentially) is the hole in the firewall, how can they give you cert with a hole in the firewall?!It's not like it's a small one either...well to me 250 x 300 mm is a bit on the large side...
