4agte fuel economy!

Postby Andy from the block » Thu Feb 10, 2005 11:09 pm

I just bought a AE101 GTZ with a turbo conversion.
Its running a series 4 rx7 turbo which I was told was quite large, able to support over 330hp easy.

The car has had a engine rebuild less than 700kms ago.
But looking at how much fuel its going through Im seriously wondering
if somethings up.
It does around 230kms to 42L of 98 octane.
5.4kms a litre!!!
This is with moderate boosting and average stop and go traffic driving.
When I stand outside I can smell petrol quite strongly.. much more so than my other levin.

Is this normal for 4agte's? or for engines with recent rebuilds?
Why does the car seem to run soo rich?

It may be tuned to run rich and safe... take it to a dyno and get a A/F graph.

The MR2 is doing about 6-8km's/litre. Me is only got 8-9 pounds of boost though...

Welcome to turbo powa :?

yeah I suspect it might be tuned to run rich.

How exactly do they tune the A/F mix?
Im kinda thinking its wayy too rich/safe cuz even evos/skylines/wrxs etc with more power than Im putting out dont guzzle gas like that.

A standard S4 turbo? Would have thought that would incredibly laggy on a 4AGE :?
It probably is just in a basic state of tune while the motor is being run in, once it is it'll be ready for a dyno tune, that will sort it out no end.

nah not standard s4 turbo, mated with skyline exhaust i'd say. Work pretty dam well actually.

Andy - thats way too much fuel mate. Considering I can get 400-450km per tank on that amount of gas running around on 1bar or more.

I doubt its 'tuned' to run that way as there is pretty limited tuning that can be done with the std ecu still in place.

might find the injector seals have given up the go or something like that?

it isnt a standard series 4 turbo, machined out t3 exhaust,
a for that much fuel ???, im know i use to have a lot better fuel ecomomy than that,
is it running allright? is the exhaust out lets very black?
the a/f was checked when it was dynoed running 11psi, it pretty sweet then. i never got the actual a/f print out so i cant say for sure what the ratios were.

actually, did you manage to suss out the speedo problem you posted up about? do a check with another car and recored the same distance on both odometers and make sure its the same. sounds a bit like what it did when the first speedo died.

Previous owner didn't just replace the injectors with bigger ones? Then it would run pig rich. Still running the gze computer or aftermarket??

check for leaks around injectors.
mine used that much fuel as well, if not more, and always stunk of gas, untill i checked the injector seals to find they were poked.
