3S-FE vs 3S-GE Is there a BIG difference between em' ?

Postby Taurex » Sun Feb 13, 2005 3:21 am

HI !
I've finally decided to buy myself a celica(any but the turbo) or a curren(2l ones only). The versions of these cars I look for come either with 3s-fe engine(2l 140 h.p.) or have 3s-ge one(2l 180 h.p.). My question is: "Are the toyotas equiped with the 3S-GE really win in speed dynamics and torque over the 3S-FE ones or the difference is not that big to buy only the car with more powerful engine. Besides, I heard that 3s-ge is a lot more thirstier than 3s-fe. I wonder if its true аnd what about the differences(if any) in terms of reliabilty and maintenance ?
I'd really appreciate any replies from owners of toyotas(preferably celicas or currens) with such engines. It will help me to choose the right one.
Thanks.

When I first had a Celica (1996 SSII 3S-GE), I did a little research into the engine types and it would seem that the FE is basically an 'economy' version. As far as I could find out, it was the head which was different. Didn't go as far as finding out mpg or anything like that though.
I'm pretty sure that it will be dependant on model year as to which motor the car will have. Not sure if the later cars had FE motors.

dont get a 3sfe unless you never want any performance... 3sge kills it for grunt. if you thrash it, it will use more gas, power = fuel...

my advice is dont even consider the 3sfe, but having said that its you that will have to live with it, go drive a coupla versions of each and see what you think.

only concerns with the 3sge in a celica is the tendacny to leak out the back of the tappet cover, but thats no major

Youre asking a bunch of boyracers. Dont expect to get a straight answer where theres a comparison between performance of engines! :|

My first Celica was a 3SFE. I've since had a 3SGTE and a 3SGE and I can tell you now that the 3SFE isnt as bad as people say it is.

Its the 'Economy' Head. Thats what the F means. Yes, its lower HP. Torque wise its lower, but not as significantly.

Its a very fuel efficient engine. You wont get the same economy in a 3SGE nomatter how gently you treat it.

OTOH you can use the revs of a 3SFE and it'll deliver realistically. Its not a performance engine. So it depends on what you want to do with it.

My el-budget Celica (purchased before I knew much about them) with its 3SFE did me well for 2 years and was sold because it was getting old, not for any other significant reason. Theyre bulletproof, pretty much, though the 3SGE is comparable. If you are worried about horsepower, get the 3SGE but dont let horsepower alone govern your choice.

Among other things the 3SFE is probably gonna be more common in the Curren. See more 3SGE's in Celicas. So weigh all the options when purchasing, and give engine some value, but dont let TS bias you too far :)

Have you ever driven a 3SFE? I'm guessing no...

I have the 3sfe in my car, and it's slow as hell. But then, most NA 2.0L cars are anyway... But keep in mind, toyota dont call it the 'economy' head for nothing. In car terms, economy = less power.

speedsterchick: Your Celica is NZ new isn't it?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I think NZ new models come with the 2.2l 5SFE whereas the jdm base model comes with the 3SFE

What does your speedo go up to?
When does your registration say your car was first registered?

Yea, Jap import then.

You should be relieved, the 5SFE is gutless in comparison ;)

The 3sf in my Corona was alright, even carbed it kept up with a gti pulsar pretty much... well, until 140-ish.

Also pretty good on gas despite the one off $15 to travel 9kms trip out to langs...
