sw20 vs ae101

Postby deaf_rattle » Sun Feb 13, 2005 7:11 pm

my g/f is on the lookout for a new car, and we are thinking either an n/a (auto) sw20, or an auto ae101 levin or trueno

your job is to convince me which is best.

cheers

the silvertop is also faster :P.

http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/5484/
Trueno
Power density = 7.12

http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/54/
Mr2
Power density = 7.47 :)

lower = faster, AND better on fuel

Convince you which is best? You sure she's the one buying the car? ;)
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

that depends matt.... what is she looking for in a car?

What attributes are most important to her?

What attributes fit best to your guys lifestyle?

both cars are entirely different (putting aside the badge, number of doors and transmission type) in layout, fuel consumption, handling characteristics and space, so its difficult to make a direct comparison

get the silvertop if shes not really a techincal driver
the sw20 is a sports car

the silvetop is more like a town car

even good drivers with years of driving experiance crash sw20's
cant say the same for a 101

I agree here. For me, it's a no brainer, get the SW20, but I would never let my gf buy one, yet I was trying to convince her to get a 20v.

one problem my step mum had with her auto 20v, is that the autos like to drop into a low reving gear to cruise in, like any normal auto does, but it drops the 20v out of it's power range, sure it's fine if you nail it and it drops down, but for cruising, it just didn't have the power behind it. her new bmw, even though it's got 20hp less, drives a lot better due to better located torque band.

just something to note.

thanks ofr your input.

Well really she just wants a car that she can use when i am not around (we mostly go out in my car at present) but that is likely to change when she gets her new car.

It may be used for going shopping in (mr2 have much space?)

she is really liking the sw20 at the moment, and yes i have thought about the whole rwd thing, but i have complete confidence in her driving and i know she wouldnt do anything stupid.

Me on the other hand....

I think the sw20 appeals to her more due to there being less of them around.

i guess we might have to test drive both of them

with the SW20, take out the spare tire and you got ample boot space at the front and behind the engine bay. every more so reason to go shopping with style and drift lol. think of the SW20 as your real life, real size to scale R/C car, you can go nuts with it. but yeah definately recommend the SW20. tough the auto may not do much justice, at least she's over a spare hand free for the usual morning makeup and cellphone while driving routine, though not recommended.

cant u convince her to get a manual? im a big ae101 fan but the autos... well that was a very vdery bad idea.. the 20v is so unsuited to one.
just did a auto to manual conversion on one and the difference is amazing.

but yeah, get her to drive both and see what she thinks!

are the auto 16v ones better? or even worse?

i havent taught her to drive manual, but she said even if she knew how, she would prefer the auto.

she just wants a nice casr to drive, not too fussed on changing gears etc

tell her changing gears is like having sex but she has alot more control to suit her ride/cruise, whatever you want to call it. if she wants harder poundings with more torque, drop down a few gears, if she wants more speed, shift up a few gears. clutch is there to help her do slideways lol. last but not least if she wants to change to doggy style, shift on reverse. hopefully that will change her mind.

haha

she currently drives an ultra reliable honda city at the moment, so im sure an auto ae101 will feel like a rocket compared to that.

but yeah she wants to spend about $4k.

But the least amount she spends on the car, means the more she can (me) put into the stereo etc

Mods will be limited to a nice sounding stereo and probably pod filter

Might be able to talk her into lowering whatever she gets and maybe if we find some cheap mags do that.

But yeah we will see how it goes

Go the sw20.

Comfy and pretty. As for luggage space... If you're only shoppin for two people there's a surprising amount of room in the boot.
