Mr2 not boosting proberly

Hey Guys, fairly new to toyspeed (although i have been reading it fo a while).

Anyway i recently brought a 96 MR2 GT which was all sweet. Last week I took it to the garage and had the cambelt changed.

Now when you accelerate, its really jerky when it should come on boost, with not much power until it gets to about 4500rpm then it seems to come on boost properly and goes fine.
Im sure it came on boost sooner before the cambelt change.
What could be the problem?
Could they have stuffed the timing?

Can you use a timing light? You have to bridge terminals te1 and e1 in the diagnostics box then check with the timing light. it should be 10 deg btdc.

What about plugs,leads,dizzy cap and rotor? Changed those recently. Find Mr Revheads post at the top of Parts for sale and he can sort you out with new ones. Most 3sgte problems seem to be ignition related

my bet would be that the person who changed the cambelt didn't do a good job, if it's a tooth out on the intake cam, that'll screw up the timing on the igntion, I went thru that path before thinking it'll be "sweet as", I've lost about 50% of my power just because a tooth out, get it checked.

PS: most likely it's the cambelt not done properly, the garage probably did a 1/2 assed job since the MR2 cam belt is hard to change.

I'd be picking its a tooth out also. Doesn't sound like much of a problem but it makes one hell of a difference

I took it back to the garage and they changed the ignition timing and it seems to be going fine now

if they changed the ignition timing due to a tooth out, that means your intake or exhaust cam timing is out now, which is still bad.

Sounds like they have the cams one tooth retarded, and have just advanced the timing to compensate.

If it were my car, I'd take it somewhere else and get them to check the cam timing (actually I'd do it myself, but you might not feel that confident).
