1999 rolla wagon turbo questions

Postby shaggz » Thu Feb 17, 2005 12:33 pm

i gots a 99 rola wagon 4afe engine, i wanna know if i could turbo factory motor and jst run low boost say bot 10psi max, oor would the motor need strengthning up first, if so id most likely jst shoehorn in a 4agze and do it that way but was curious as to the possibly off turboing the 4afe
drive it till it breaks, then upgrade it

i wound not reccomend leaving the motor standard and just sticking a turbo kit on it 4a-fe motors are made for fuel economy not racy like the g series head you would need to do alot of work to make it turbo and last .

Just my two cents could be wrong.

Should be fine for low boost. Probably wouldn't go over 7psi personally without touching the internals as they are pretty light in the 4afe's to give a bit more responsiveness.

They get turbo'd a bit more overseas, especially where the GE's weren't as readily available.

Search for posts under the username TWSTD. You'll find some good info about a turbo setup on a 7afe.

7afe is more the 1.8L version of your engine

the Ge engine hes talking about is the 4age, 4agze etc, the more performance orientated version of your engine (different, head, pistons etc) can take a bit more of a trashing.

honestly i wouldnt turbo it, just asking for trouble down the line.

id go with shoehorning a 4agze in, turbo it..... least then shes reliable :).

and why does everyone think 10psi is low boost?

Postby shaggz » Thu Feb 17, 2005 1:56 pm

what was ment bot the ge and g i know the 4age and in particular the 4agze are stronger, potentially i thought i might go the 4agze version leave it supercharged as then it would possibly make a better towing wagon than if it was turbo'ed now that ive thought about it more and im saving for jetskies heheh, ill let yuo all know what root i end up taking body kit is next and paint then you mite see it around on the show circuit
drive it till it breaks, then upgrade it

no difference in the strength of the 4age vs 4agze cept for the pistons.

you could buy a 20v rebuild it and still have $$ left over. cheaper than buying a 4agze.

your sure of this

half of the ppl ive talked to say the rods and crank strength differs.

so it would cost sweet $&#$% all to make an ae111 go... um, fast :) if done right?

i wonder how many times iv posted this.....

there are only 2 types of crank for the entire 4age range
right from the first blutop to the last black top.
blue top has one type, all others have the other. 4agze crank is the same

4agzes have the same rods as the same year 4ages. blacktops have the thinnest rods. yet to be proven if they are as strong as earlier ones but i doubt it

those ppl dont know sh*t

If you'd have thought about this a bit more perhaps you wouldn't have posted it at all. I mean you're on here often enough to know that when it comes to what parts are in what engine Mr Revhead know's his stuff, FFS he's got the latest Toyota EPC in front of him what more evidence do you need? All you've done is clutter up the thread with crap and waste Mr Revhead's time.

And so I'm not entirely doing the same thing, turboing any NA motor is fine provided that you can adjust the fuel, timing and boost so as to completely avoid detonation, and that the engine is not loaded past it's mechanical limits (which varies from engine to engine). This is a lot easier said than done.
