Supercharge or Turbocharge Blacktop

Postby Flyboy » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:39 pm

If a building a more powerful but responsive blacktop motor is better(and easier) to supercharge or turbocharge?

um.. responce? n/a :P cost you a $&#$% heap though

just turbo it, supercharging is for engines with torque. the blacktop lacks it :).

oh and just for the record... i vote n/a high high comp toda pistons, trd gasket, toda cams, springs, the lot.

i reackon shed be quite a bit of fun :)

I think that you'll find that supercharging any engine will give it more drivable torque across a wide band.

When you 'hot up' a small N/A motor you tend to narrow the power range to the extremes. This means if you want it to be responsive you'll need to sit in the power range which isn't practical on the street but perfectly normal on a club/race car.

If you want a street car which is responsive and 'torquey' you can't go past a supercharger. You will however be limiting you maximum HP as a supercharger can only spin so fast before it'll be ineffcient or blow to pieces.

With a turbo there are options for big power but again this big power is only made in the extreme RPM range. You could get a small turbo but the trottle response is nullified by turbo lag.

Im not sure about bolt on kits for a turbo or supercharger. I know TRD make bolt on supercharger kits but I suspect they would be quite pricey. I do not know of any bolt on 4AGE turbo kits however I do know 4AFE turbo kits exsist.

Hmm, actually a turbo is quite capable of making a large increase in power across the entire rev range too, though obviously peak power is going to be high in the rev range.

Generally, modern smaller turbos have very little lag, though they won't boost from idle like a supercharger, they are still capable of spooling under 2000rpm.

turbos are a sublkect to desighn
you have to relally think about what your tring to do and size them accordingly

both have there advantages and both have there bain's
and cosmo yet again stfu you have no idea at all

but has alot of technical knowledge unlike alot of people who just post bullshit ^^^^
I would say turbo. Is alot easier to wind up the boost to make more power once you have it setup if you want to make more power later. Also would cost much the same to turbo as supercharge. Also look at the # of people that convert their 4agzes to turbo. Superchargers require engine power to drive them whereas turbos do not. Sc12s are quite restrictive and arent very efficient at high rpm, and to go for an aftermarket supercharger you are looking at big dollars

Umm, I think you'll find that it's the supercharger that gives them the torque.

We have played with a 1GGZE and have run s/c, twin charge, and turbo charged.

the S/C gives it more low down power but ot runs out high in the rpm.
Good for a street car.

Twincharge gave us horrendus torque ( and 30psi boost at 1000rpm) which fryed tyres like there was no tomorrow but when it got up in the revs where the good HP should be, the S/C just couldnt flow enough air and strangled it making it feel fast but go slow.

The turbo option is what we have now and is by far the quickest in lap times at the track, but it makes a very shitty road car as there is nothing down low. ( turbo's probably a bit big)

Also in my opinion the S/C gives you good boost at low rev's which is where detonation occours, so you'll need good pistons if you want to go that way. (Possibly why the GZE engines have forged pistons std and the GTE engines dont)

30PSI AT 1000RPM!!!!! 8O
Insane!!!!

I'm interested in the aspect of the s/c becoming too restrictive at higher RPM. Wouldn't there be a way to bypass the s/c at higher revs?

Just out of curiostiry.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

If I supercharged it would it be easier to use a 4AGZE one or another one?

Of course you can bypass the S/C at high revs, but its a bit of a bitch to try and set up piping and whatnot to do so. Most twincharge tend to be one charger feeding into the other so the other option is have them independant from each other and feeding into the same point which means you need a way of either bypassing one charger to nothing when the other kicks in, or to turn it off (hello electric clutch).

The sc12 'roots type' superchargers run out of puff up top. go foe a 'screw type' supercharger or turbo.
Do heaps of research with the turbo as selecting the right turbo, A/R ratios can be a bit of an art and the turbo's maps dont tell you everything.

Aparently a big compressor and small turbine is the way to go for small engines and big Hp.

But that's only what ive read/been told. Best to talk to people with firsthand experiance. Such as Vega.

BTW, X ur a fckn knob.

I would go turbo but whatever you do make sure you get rid of those blacktop rods! :D

I have 2 AE101 GTZs
one is turbo, one is supercharged.

The S/C GTZ I have, has a 175mm pulley kit , cold air intake and 2.5inch exhaust.

After driving the turbo GTZ for the first few times, I thought to myself, hey this feels way more 'laggy' than the supercharger.

But now that Ive driven the turbo GTZ more, Ive learnt to manage the lag much better (say if I wanted a little boost around a corner I would know to step on the gas before the corner came up , to spool the turbo, instead of step on the gas on the corner as I would with the S/C). Once I understood the characteristics of the turbo and stopped driving it like it was S/C I realised turbo is far far superior.

People say the S/C gives great throttle response and has no lag , even at low rpms. True. But the inefficiencies of the S/C on a small engine mean this "boost" is not as powerful as the same psi comming from a turbo.
As soon as you give the turbo a little gas to spool up, even a few psi..it will pull much better than a S/C (even with my 175mm pulley kit).

The S/C "feels" fast at low rpm because torque hits instantly due to the S/C being belt driven via the crank. But if you look at the speed, the turbo is in a differnt league...by about 3500rpms when you can feel my turbo pulling , its going noticeably faster than the S/C even tho it may read about half the psi. Once you get used to spooling up the turbo and how to drive around the lag, going back to driving the S/C feels noticeably much slower.

So, by mid range revs the turbo is definately much faster, then when you reach high revs and full boost, the turbo would jst kill my S/C.
