Corolla RunX automatic gearbox - problem (maybe!)

Postby SilverStack » Mon Feb 21, 2005 3:15 pm

I've just bought a Corolla RunX "Z" and some things are different to the cars I am used to driving. This car has the Celica engine and a four speed automatic gearbox.

I need to know if certain characteristics are normal, or do I go back and pester Toyota.

On my previous Marino kick down was quite hard to achieve, but on the RunX it drops a cog (or two) very quickly. Pressing the accelerator about 2/3rds of the way down at 90kph causes the car to drop from 4th -> 2nd, and the engine climbs to the red line - hmm!

Is this reasonable? Is this wrong? Can I get it altered? Etc

That's basically how my car reacts when in "PWR" mode.

My Hiace was like that, adjusted the cable right out too and it still didn't do bugger all.

So I removed the cable from the bracket/nut assembly and leave it free, just change gear with the shift.

I think you'll find that's on the older models.

Sounds like your car is later model.

the cable only adjusts kickdown pressures.

The ECU and TPS will control which gear is selected.

You may find that it is normal as the car may need to rev to get it top go,
especially if it has the 2ZZGE in it.

wobble gate gear shift

Postby andyztouring » Mon Feb 21, 2005 9:05 pm

If your Runx has the wobble gate shifter, if you want just one gear downshift ,just flick the gear lever over to the right ,it downshifts and stays there until you flick the lever back across, almost a tiptronic type of gearshift.
