Are there any FWD/4WD 1UZ cars

Just a crazy thought I had...
Might in the future build a special car carry vehicle... FWD will allow a real low load deck...
Not ideal... but just a possibility.

I know there are plenty around who have done the 1uz -> hilux conversion, so I imagine you could hybridise the 4wd to a 2wd perhaps?

Only non RWD 1UZ powered car I know of is the UZS143 Aristo but it was only available in auto and probably didn't sell all that well as was no longer produced after the facelift in August 1997 I do believe.

I thought of doing a hybrid 4WD to FWD if I was to start this project.
The plan was to use a Hilux, stuff a 1UZ into it, modify the back end to have a flat, wide, low tray that I could get my AE85.5 onto. It would be quite wide (but it'd be nicer than buying an F350).

So i guess the next question would be... What's the speed limit (on motorway) of a flatbed towing truck. 80kph? Or 100kph?

This idea would only be moved into the next phase if it's 100 kph...

I wonder if I could find a front cut from one of those aristos... An auto box would be quite nice for the lounging tow...

This idea would only really be fun if I could cruise at 100 (cough 110) with the AE85.5 on the back.
Well... maybe it's onto the seriously considering back burner pile... to join my twincharged 4AGE for the next 12 months...

If you keep the GVM under 3500kg then you should have the normal 100kph speed limit.

My suggestion would be a small cabover truck (hilux with car on back gets pretty long), run two rear diffs from a Hiace lowloader (the ones with the real small wheels) but have only one diff driven. This way you get decent load carrying capacity, a low deck height and don''t need to go wide to fit the car between the rear wheels. If you do go the hilux though, airbag it so you can jack the front up and don't need ramps.

Car towing rules and speed limits relate to trailers, if it loaded on the back of a fixed deck then the limit is still 100kph.

Just keep within those dimensions and rated to carry less than 3.5 tonnes and should be fine.

when did they lower the limit again??? it was put up to 4500kg.... or that may have just been the change over to the class 2 truck licence..

Well... apart from costs this could be a "go" project...

Since the whole back end will be custom frame I don't think it'll make much difference if I use Hilux front or small truck front. But small trucks are UGLY...

Changeover to class 2 is 4500kg...

I wouldn't expect the GVM of this project to be over 3500kgs.
My AE85.5 is only around 950kgs, so that allows around 2500kgs for the vehicle itself... What's a Hilux normally weigh in at?
Widths and length will be okay. My AE85.5 is only around 1.4m wide, plus if I go wide tray then the wheels will add 300mm each. Total width should be about 2m. Length will be easily less than the 9m+4m rear overhang. Heck. I might even put some space for spare wheels! Although I might be able to just "bolt" them to the sides of the tray...

I think I'm gonna try and develop some concepts...

AE85 is more than 1.4m, especially with bigger feet. Track width standard is around 1370mm???? and thats from centre of tread to centre of tread.
I guess I was thinking more cheap options (such as factory low loader Hiace diffs) but it has to look cool too or whats the point. If you do go FWD maybe start with a 4WD Hilux and lift the front suspension up into the chassis and mod the tranfer case to FWD only. Then either adapt another chassis to the rear or build your own. For load carrying twin axles would be the best bet.
The reason I suggested cabover is parking, the extra length with the hiace could be a bit of a hassle.

Yeah AE85 is a bit more than 1.4m. But not too much more so I just rounded. I've squeeze mine through a door that I think was about 1.5 wide... That was a hard push...

Yeah. I was thinking that the best way would be to go 4WD and just mod the transfer to be FWD only. But I might even investigate if it would really be that much taller if I went RWD or 4WD. I mean how bling would it be to have a 4WD wide, low trayed vehicle transporter!!!
Yeah I might have to consider twin axle... It'd probably be build my own rear chassis...

If there is anyone out there who has mucked around with modding utes and stuff I'd be keen to hear any input...

The owner (Justen) has no intention of 4wd. He is currently looking for means to keep the rear tyres on the ground!
