Checking gearbox oil

How do i check the gearbox oil level in a manual ae101 4AGE and wat sorta colour and thickness should it be

there is a 24mm bolt/plug half way up the front of the box, the oil should be leval with the plug hole

May as well just change the oil while you're at it, open the filler hole first, then drain the box out the bottom plug hole. Make sure the car is on a flat surface and fill the box until the oil runs out the filler hole and you're done.
Check the Toyota reccomended grade but it should be something like a 80-90 GL-4 between 2-3 litres.
