Whirling Noise :)

Postby CozmoNz » Wed Feb 23, 2005 12:07 pm

Ok, theres a noise from the Rear of my ae111

a whirling noise (obviously).

more of a Whir.. whir... whir.. whir...

its speed dependant (man i wish i was rpm dependant :D)

ive replaced all 4 wheel bearings recently (few months?), and wondering what else there is.

Checked with Curzon mag n tire, they said it was Tire wear.... which dosnt seem right, since the tires stll have a good 5mm of tread on them... and the handbrake is just to shitty for handbrakies :D.

Any chance it COULD be the balance of the rear wheels?

or anything else i should try look into. or should i just leave it as tire wear?

Could be alignment. What sort of tyres do you have? Some tyres i've had make huge amounts of road noise.

My BZG used to do the same thing. And my FX GT does it now too. Must have something to do with the brakes. Im not too sure. But ive had both front arms replaced and it seems to have stopped (not that iwas listening out for it) but too hear it i have to drive beside a wall so it echoes off the wall and into the car. I check it out. But doesnt effect the drive - more annoying than anything

I know it's probably hard to tell but does it make the sound from one or from both of the rear wheels?
Perhaps it could be a stone in the brakes?

Or a tyre on it way to delaminating. Jack it up and check them for bulges, out of round, distorted tread. Get a mate to listen out the window to see if you track which side it's coming from.
See ya

My tyres make a hell of a racket but then again $80 for two (used jap ones) so I cant complain. Does the noise continue on smooth tarmac surfaces too? Thats how I concluded that it must be the tyres as on the open road its needs the stereo cranked up to overcome it but on the smooth stuff... well its like a have $2k worth of tyres on the car :P

Look CelicaGT for a spin, in the rain, full throttle up that hill by tomahawk.. near the cemetary... where that Fked up corner is... mild understeer, and that was it. bit the road and we were off again.

Bald tyres grip the road better (slicks anyone?) until it gets wet, then it all turns to custard.

Have you had different tyres on the rear before?

In this car ive only used these tires...

in my old subie i used yoko's but then again, they were like 195's r15 i think... with monster tread for giving it shit on gravel :D.

so i cant really relate these tires to anything else.

everyone who has driven my car though seems to have said it handles on rails..... and the tires are the only thing that hold the car to the road >.>

Actually its a combination of things that keep the car on the road, the suspension is just as vital to it. You have superstrut dont you?

Just by the sound you've described and how its speed dependant, i'm gonna go with it just being the tyres being noisy buggers.

You can, just remove the wheels.

Likewise, just remove the engine! Oh and while you're at it you could put a stereo in to drown out the wind blowing passed your wing mirrors.
