God Damn!!!!

Well after picking up my new project engine and starting to strip it down. Heres what I found:

Got tin foil in your sump? must be bad!!!

One nut missing from No. 4 bigend and the other holding on by about 2mm and the bearing cap just slopping around!!!

Havent got the crank out yet but will this probably call for a new one among other things!

 Thats scary! One bolt on a big end!!!

its amazing what you find eh, on mine, on no4 piston, their were foriegn bearing caps! From a honda i think, and they slighlty undersized, so the journal was scratched to death! Had to buy a new one.

Also the crank/cam pulley was tacked on with a mig. I remember i posted a thread about "How the fuk do i get this off?!!"

But one rod bolt, that takes the cake. Wonder how the tin foil got there? Maybe he stashed his dak in the oil filler and forgot about it?

I think you should ask BL8KK9T about that one lol!
Nah its the remains of No. 4's big end I think but the seems to be a hell of a lot of it cos theres still some of the bearing where it should be.
Looks like the bottom end had been done at some stage and they only put the nuts on a couple of threads 'coz the thread on the studs and nuts are perfectly fine!!!

Oh, well looks like the perfect excuse to head off to Toyota for some ZE bits then.

was it a case of 'oopps one of the bearings is rooted, i'll jamm some tin foil in their to silence the rattle' tricks.

car dealers used to put wax paper between the con-rod/cap and bearing shell to do the same trick.

That's what happens when someone has fitted new bearings and not fitted new conrod bolts. Chances are the missing nut will be in the bottom of the sump somewhere.

Check all the others, you'll probably find that some of them are loose too.
I have struck this a few times with s/h engines i have bought.

Yeah, ive found the other nut buried amongst the other crap in the bottom of the sump. Good point Matt, when the bolts stretch a little, the cap 'slaps the nuts' so to speak, and they slowly work their way undone. Makes sense to me.

Havent completely cleaned it up yet but its looking like the oil pump, Theres a whole heap of build up around there, looks like its been leaking for a while 'coz its all mixed with dirt/dust and the odd piece of tarmac around the bottom of the cambelt cover.

I think i disrupted a few families whilst pulling it apart, there was a snail hiding behind an inlet valve and a tribe of spiders in No. 2 cyl!!!

But other than that, nothing a good rebuild wont fix.
