Spring installation on AE92 FXGT

Postby gordon77 » Wed Feb 23, 2005 10:26 pm

ok the car is way to low thanks to the previous owner compressing the origional springs
i am looking at getting new jamex springs for the car basically to tighten things up and raise it a little. few questions....
has anyone else had jamex springs in thier AE92 that could send me pics??? gdear@pasound.co.nz
also installation... as i will be getting the springs through a mate and i cant install them so i was wondering what sort of money id be looking at to get them installed??? i was quoted $50 + GST per corner by someone and that seems a tad over the top to me....

thanks ppl

$50 per corner is crazy, usually its about $80-$120 for the lot, or you could just borrow some spring compressors and do it yourself, its not that hard

How could the springs fly out? They're macpherson coil over design aren't they?

Anyways, dunno anyone in auckland, but a good mechanic or tyre shop should be able to do it in 45mins, so dont pay more than $75-$100.

well it is to low . . . 90mm above ground (to lowest structural point) it becomes a pain in the ass when you have more than one person in te back... the body roll is huuge when cornering.... list goes on

yes compressed springs are baaaad.

and yes springs flying out and damaging ppl and propety can and does happen. thats why good correctly fitting spring compressors are a must.

I wasnt meaning spring compressors as in permanently compressing the springs, I was talking about the compressors you use to remove/install the old/new springs from the struts.

I had some Jamex 50mm springs in my Integra - IMO they're way too soft.

Jamex are known to be soft . but the ride quality/handling of certain brand depends on the car theyre fitted to. Best to ride in a car (same model) that has the springs you want before buying them if you can.

Dont forget to get ur wheel alignment after doin your springs aswell pm me wen ud like to do it and i can do it for u if u like 8) Also wot r ur shocks like ? One of the worst things is trying to hold up a shock absorber shaft while it keeps slippin dwn as its rooted :D

also, just to note, on ae92's the front brake hose has to be removed as it goes through a bracket attached to the shock (unless you grind the bracket off- which a mechanic wont/shouldnt do) so that also means bleeding the breaks and a little more labour time...still, if you have not done before, good time to get it done!...

or u can put a small cutt in the bracket and bend it out of the way and then bend it back into place wen u put it back 8)

well thats one thing i just thought about. because the car is so low i am thinking that the shocks must be shortened.... how do i check if they are shortened and if they are would it still be alright to put the springs on?
the other option it jst to go get some kyb shocks but id rather not because of the cost factor

look for ne welding marks but if ur keepin the car than the extra shell out now on the shocks should surely be worth it , i can do u kybs or konis or woteva u like and at a good price so let me know if u wana get teh package , but in my opinion is worth the little extra now rather than later and the handling of the car will change dramatically. :D

I'm starting to enjoy the nice bouncy ride my compressed springs offer.

As for 90mm being too low...

Thats just getting started...

Anyway, you could always get custom made springs...?
As for the shocks being shortened, not nessecarily, my VR4 sat 65mm off the ground at its lowest point with standard shocks, and the springs were still fully captive.

im just going off what a few suspention ppl have told me... :?

heres an argument im sure has been battered before on this forum but lets bring it up   ... for an AE92 FXGT that is having jamex 50mm springs fitted what would be the best bet in the way of shocks between kyb, koni, and munroe. dont go into platforms or ajustables....

THA SHZ: you have a pm 8)
