bluetop ecu question

Postby LoRolla » Wed Mar 02, 2005 9:29 pm

1987 toyota corolla wagn RWD

my car is running a 4age 16v bluetop and recently fukd out and wouldnt start. An auto electrician told me it needs a new ecu, so i got one but it wasnt da right one. He then put the old one in and it startd. Here is the problem it now starts (sumtimes) and when it does it idles fine but when i touch the throttle it dies. Also sumtimes it doesnt die when i touch da throttle and i can drive it until i turn it off again.

its so confusing how it drives sumtimes but other times it wont even start.

any help considered im getting desprite, ive tryed everything i know.

Sounds like theres a loose connection in your loom somewhere. Check all your earths, then go over the ignition system connections and make sure they're all tight and clean.

If that gives no joy check the fuel system, does it die as soon as you touch the throttle or does it take a while? Fuel pump could be dodgy.

Spark+Fuel=Fire. Check for both when its playing up, let us know which one you dont have and it will narrow it down.

when it first fuked out i went straight to the fuel. fuel was flowing like a dream so went to the spark. checkd the spark and there was none. thats when i took it to the auto electricians and they told me i needed a new computor. some how they have got the old "apparently" broken ecu to work but not quite.

just got home so im gunna go check those things that you just pointed out. Just one problem i dont know how to :x . im not and electical man, more mechanical. If you could step by step me that would be awsome 8)

alright. got the thing to run ok now, it starts almost everytime apart from starting on 3 cylinders sumtimes. My dad and i checked the timing with a timing light and altered it to make her start and drive ok., still not running right but its getting sumwhere.

Do i still need a new ecu or just get my engine tuned?

Toyota ECU's are reaaly rare at crapping out, especially those early ones.

Not to say that it can't happen though.

I'd put more money on a distributor or wiring fault.

Ive had similar problems, have you got a multimeter handy?

If so, as your car starts on 3 cylinders check the resistance in your HT leads which should be around 5-6kohms. Also I would check your fuel, a car running excessivly rich will often only fire on 3 initally, then 4 when u start driving it, check the resistance in your coolant temp sensor. I could go on, but that should get you started....
