Larger throttle body - 4age

Postby ants_ae92 » Mon Mar 07, 2005 9:46 am

Are there any benefits of fitting a larger throttle body? I was thinking of getting one made up or finding a toyota one to fit, like an sw20 mr2 one.

I am aware that the intake manifold will have to be bored out a little bit to match the throttle body.

I have a big port 4age head with tvis, with a small port block, compression of around 10.7:1 and it will have 264deg intake, 256deg exhaust cams. And NOS later on.

Does anyone know the throttle sizes for the various toyota engines, especially the 4age (can't be bothered measuring it as I dont have a spare).

Any help or info is much appreciated.

As far as im aware, a larger throttle body on standard intake manifold doesnt help at all, as the intake manifold is the main restriction.

If you could measure the size of the butterfly it would be good. Im still collecting more parts for that engine combination, dont have an intake manifld to compare it too.

Thanks anyway dude.

For the record, bigport tvis throttle butterfly is 55mm in diameter.

inlet manifold entry is 56mm.

(Yes, i did just go and measure it for you.)

we run a vr4 throttle body on our 4agze, bolts straight up, just had to do a minor mod for the tps.
not sure if there is much performance difference, as we ran it from the start

I'm running a ZR4 throttle body (60mm) on mine which has a D shaft so the stock tps slides straight on. Also don't know if it makes any difference as I ran with it from the start and made other inlet manifold modifications at the same time. Cold engine idle up is fairly easy to setup too.

Thanks King corolla, hows that rebuild coming by the way?

Thanks alot EP71-4age and evil_si

Do the zr4 or vr4 throttle bodies have the idle up's, for power steering etc? I thought it would be easier to use a toyota one as it may have exactly the same things like that.

Anyone else using a larger throttle body?

Anyone know the size of a standard ze throttle body? For a 5mm gain in size I dont know if it is worth it? Maybe if I could get my hands on a throttle body that was 70mm it may be worth the effort, or is it?

4age throttle = 55mm (Thanks King corolla)
4agze throttle = ?

Could this possibly be a good mod for a gze? (not that I have one!)

goin from say 50mm to 55mm is almost 20% more area, quite a bit bigger if your look at i that way

going too big will just effect drivablity.
