if i could get some opinions about them and maybe some pix posted (or emailed to me acotter@maxnet.co.nz) that would be great.

do you run just to the can or also have a vac hose running from it?
I origonally just ran to the can but had problems with fumes so put a smalll (small) vac pipe back to the inlet. the catchcan still works fine, but no more smell :)

bling, bling baby

Postby 3T-Rona » Wed Mar 09, 2005 8:08 pm

apart from the "fancy" factor, do they actually have a point? correct me if im wrong, and please do, but dont they just collect the vented blow by? unless ur going to pour the precious waste oil back into the motor wouldnt it be just as gd to vent it..... down or out if u will... i'd c the point if it was to kept the paint in ur engine bay form being dirtied but then u c the catch cans with lil filters on top, would the blow by not just vent out the filter?
im confussed, sorry to wine :D

oil mist in your intake can lead to detanation:D
this is the reason why you use a catch can

Standard setups usually vent it into the intake.

Some catch cans vent out the bottom, and some collect it.

You can use a shiny bling bling one, or a coke bottle and some garden hose. Your choice.

So would it be fair to say that if you don't seem to get any detonation, that it would be pointless? Or would it still be a good idea to play it on the safe side?

i decided to put one on when i saw the amount of oil inside my intake... rather a lot. and the old oily gunge it leaves around the butterflys may be contributing to the jerky part throttle response, i think it could be causing it to stick a bit. although i think its more likely the tps needs resetting

also iv got a silvertop. so have to make sure its not pluged into the inlet or else itll be a vacuum leak. but if instead of using a filter i could run a hose back to the inlet, most if not all of the oil would be caught in the can and the fumes sucked into the intake, may need to baffle the can. may have to do that. but i dunno if i can be bothered! ill see if i can stand the oil smell first! the more i think about it the better having a little bit of vacuum there sounds....

wild card.... catch can.. or charcoal canister? where does it plumb off?

if your engine is in good running condition then you probably dont need one.

i fitted one cause of the oil i get in my intake (common 20v trait) and the fact it cost me stuff all and we all like to play with things!
weather or not i NEEDED to do it is another matter.....

On cranking and on overrun you can have negitive crankcase pressure. So you end up drawing straight from the oil catch can. This is the reason the better catch cans have a filter on them. Otherwise you'll be drawing the dirty air directly from the engine bay, dirt and all.

The reason race cars have oil catch cans on production engines is the fact that they can generate such high g's they end up pushing oil straight down the breather into the intake. Car ends up choking on so much oil. Its generally more prevalant in one direction. IE car turns left blue smoke car turns right no problemo.

Oh and Blitza an oil catch can isn't a fix for burning oil. They generally arent drained back to the sump because oil vented to a catch can contains a lot of fuel (fuel and oil light end are the first to vent) so it dilutes your oil so that it no longer performs its lubrication job.

hmm ok then...
how do the internals (well i mean they cant be that complex, but ya know what i mean) of a catch can work? is it just a couple of holes in the top, or should there be certian legnths for in/out tubes to protude into the can?
and im meaning proper cans, not just the garden hose in a bottle/ali can.

im looking at making one up outa say 3" ss tube, capping the ends, putting in a level indicator and a drain hole.
what kinda sizes would be suitable?

EDIT: and also since its a turbo, do any vacuums/returns or anything need to be connected?
im thinking of breather goes in to catch can, lil filer thing on outlet, and just plugging the air intake hole (where breather would have returned), or would it be better to run the catch can outlet back to the intake?
to drain or not to drain?

cheers for the input :)

ones that suit hose's and filters you can get! mine had odd ball sizes which made it a pita.

makes the feed tubes the size to fit the hoses from the tappet cover, mine were diff sizes meaninf i had to step them up. will look neater and be easier if you can keep the hose the same dia.

dont have to have internals, but id liek a deflector that angles doen across the tube out lets, so and oil coming in hits that and is deflected down, leave a gap at the bottom to allow fumes up into the filter/vacuum hose. may noe HAVE to do taht, but thats what id like.

if fitting a drain youll have o drill into the sump or block... but dont the 3sgte have a drain from the tappet cover to the block? tap into that

the other option is to pipe your idle-air intake pipe into the hole where your oil breather line went to...
