clutch install on GT4 celica help..

any1 know from experience how tricky it is 2 do the clutch? 4wd mess

does:

a) engine need 2 b removed?
b) how long would it take?
c) is DIY recommended?
d) how much 4 clutch (not hard out heavy duty etc)

if its anything like my sprinter then you have to drop out the ottom suspension and drop motor and box out the bottom you need a good 100mm between the engine and suspension tower to leaver the motor off this was case with sprinter you may have more room in da celica my 4wd clutch kit was $450rrp it will be more heavy duty than a 2wd clutch hence the high price.

its about 2 days work for a firts timer
and its not for the faint hearted
that gearbox is a heavy as the bloddy engine

so not really recomended if your not bron with a spanner in your hand ...

It is possible to swap the clutch without removing the engine completely - but it is easier to take it out. Not a job for the uninitiated though that's for sure!

how did you get the 2 bolts off the gearbox brace???
just out of intrest

ive tried doing it in car 3 times and have had to remove it to make a suscessfull job
considering i can do it in 3- 4 hours now on a jack i consider myself to be not bad at it
i know it can be done providing you ommit a couple of bolts when refitting

Haven't done it myself - but know a couple of people in the UK who have. Don't know the procedure, but I gather you have to remove the transfer case or something like that.
I'm planning on an uprated clutch later in the year and will definately be getting someone else to do it!

and thats the main plroblen right there
you cant till the motor is out
one of the bolts id blocked buy the block
and that transefer case is what stops it from happening

maybe they were thinking bout thaking the motor out from the top
anothjer trikky job

you have to remove the pinion gear to get it out from the top and that could be considered buy most to be the tranfer housing ..though its not

It can be done, but as stated, it is easier to drop the lot.

When my ST165 gearbox was repaired under warranty the Gearbox Factory left the engine in.

I believe that the tranfer can be removed in-situ on ST165 and ST185, but I've tried it on ST205 and it definately cannot be done. We had a twin plate clutch installed on a ST205 engine and it took almost three hours just to get the damn gearbox on, this one was just so tight. Removed transfer and fitted gearbox, only to find transfer cannot be refitted due to a rib on the block. What a dog.

I've always found the gearbox drops on it about a minute, otherwise it will take at least 1/2 hour.

My best time to have the clutch out is 2.5 hours from driving the car in. The joys of hoists and air-tools!

Is the motor mounted the same way as in a normal Celica? with Trans axle gearbox?

The engine doesn't have to come out if this is the case, as this is the same way my engine is mounted.

Take both wheels off, hubs off, but brakes still attached, pop thenaxles out. Alternator and battery out. Clutch cover etc off.

New clutch in, everything back in. BOut 8 hours work

i shall leave it to the pros, up to them how they attack it

although these online manuals a dude found are very useful, i cant be bothered DIY

i can manage a FWD/RWD car but a GT4 is outa the question!

One of the mechanics at my work did a clutch on one last month.
Left the engine in, took 4 guys to get gearbox/transfer case back in.
But the job only took 7 hours. It was charged out at quite a bit more thou!!

Engine out isabout 3 hours on the ground and about 4 back in, easy as. I've done several times.

To get the gearbox off and leave the engine behind just take out the starter and undo the pressure plate through that hole (also the easiest way to put back in, and plate is already centred).
If you are to remove the engine take vacuum switch or sensor off as it WILL break
