TEMS

Postby baker » Fri Mar 11, 2005 3:49 pm

hey, howsit going?

i have a question for you guys, you may not be able to answer it or it may not even be possible to do but here goes.

I recently bought a 88'levin 4-age redtop (ae92? im not too clued up on the terms). It has the TEMS adjustable suspension switches but it doesnt work. i was told when i bought the car that it was not possible to get it working as it did not have the original shocks or springs in it.

just wondering if there is anyway of getting it working, other than trying to track down some old as shocks.

any help would be much appriciated, even its is a 'no, cant be done'.

cheers

Most people I know don't like TEMS or take it out their cars.

Why do you want the TEMS suspension anyway?

No, there is no way of getting TEMS to work without the original shocks, as they Electronic. Aftermarket shocks obviously arent.

You dont want to know how much they cost new from Toyota at retail

If your sure they are aftermarket your stuffed.

If the lights on the dash don't light up at all check the fuse, you would be able to tell when you are driving if the soft and hard settings are working, it makes quite a difference.

Who gives a stuff. Man, you dont want it, it's just another gimmicky little thing that used to sell cars to the ill-informed consumer of the late 80's.

it acctually wasent that bad for its time

considering nissan, toyota, mazda, ford etc etc all did the same thing

take some soft springs for comfort, add some "adjustable" shocks and walla semi "sports" suspension which still feels comfortable
clearly its not going to handle as well as some of the other things on the market but it still does the job it was intended to do ;)

TEMS died out with the AE92s didn't they? I've only seen a couple of cars with the actual shocks in them that work (and they make it very solid). My GTZ has the button for it but no wiring in the engine bay or any light on the dash.

From what I've heard the shocks were expensive (and will be a lot worse now I would imagine for new/decent ones) and they tended to fail/wear quite quickly. When they wore out people simply replaced them with more wallet-pleasing items.

Before you go tracking down some it might pay to check you've got the wiring for them going to the top of each strut tower too

GT Starlets had a TEMS option as well. On the sport setting it would rattle your dentures out and still wouldnt handle

My mates st185(?) celica (the 1990 shape anyway!)

Has TEMS, however its stuck on sport mode anyway. :)

Only because the button on the dash is physically stuck in.
