How should I adjust the tps & 'throttle buffer?' on my 4

Postby ChaosAD » Sat Mar 12, 2005 12:41 pm

My 4age idles too high but sometimes when youblip the throttle while its idling it will drop to the revs it should be.

There is some sort of little buffer that is connected to a vacum hose which stops the throttle closing fully. What is this supposed to do? there is a screw adjustment on the throttle for it, but what should it be set at?

And how do I set the tps on a bluetop?

I found a thread on setting the TPS, right down the bottem of the search page.

Could I suggest you guys start up a FAQ page? like what club4ag has?
It would make things easier than having to scan through heaps of unrelated threads to find the info your after.

its not that dampener thats causing the high idle.

the 4age in my carina idled like that, so i had a wee inspection and came across that diaphram but it wasnt hooked up to a hose. U notice that when pressure is applyed to the hose, the pushrod extends and acts like a dashpot on the throttle, yet with vaccuum - atmospheric pressures it has no contact with it at all. :? Im not sure on that one.

probably that baastard cold idle valve playing up :x

If I let off the throttle slowly it will hit the buffer thing and not close fully giving an idle of just over 2,000rpm. If I then blip the throttle or pop the bonnet and manually close the throttle properly the idle will drop back down to about 1,000rpm.

There is a bit of slack on the throttle cable when idling so thats not the cause.

Even with the hose disconected from the buffer the throttle still has to push the buffer in a bit to close fully. Maybe it just needs to be adjusted.
But to what settings?

If you have this setup:

Just take off the dash pot and block off the vacuum piping that it used. mine did the same thing and I couldnt be bothered fixing it. All it does is dampen the effect of the throttle slamming shut, most of which can be overcome by fine tuning the TPS.
