Sorry to jack the thread here guys, but I have a 4age 16v that has no rev limit or speed cutout! Would that mean an aftermarket ecu was possibly put in?

I rev my 4age ae92 levin to 8k rpm, and have clocked it with the needle going way past 180, at a guess 200. (not on public roads of course)

No possible way that this is a standard ecu?

8000 rpm. some are limited to 8200 and taking in inaccuracy of std rev counters try and make 9000 before you say it has no rev limiter, and speed limiters are easy to bypass.

Your speedcut is prob still there. My speedo indications about 205 at least b4 it hits speed cut, but i took note of the revs, and worked it out, and it came out to 186ish, so taking into account the tacho error, plus my hurried glance whislt at 186km/h the speed cut is prob dead on 180.

8K? My 3SGE goes past 8K and that redlines at 6500rpm. Try pushing it a little harder and you'll probably find it.

Have hit 8600rpm on one wet morning. I guess ill just pull it out and see what ECU it is. From your comments its probably a standard one.

Yeah an auto electrician told me the speed limiters are easy to bypass.

Damn those tacho inaccuracies!

The speed limiters arn't so easy to bepass in toyotas though. Cause to do it (snice they can't be chipped) you remove the speed input to the ecu, which cause the ecu to get upset and throw codes and maybe even lights around.

And go for the limter, hold your foot flat in 2nd, or 1st, ur not going to hurt anythg doing it once, thats what it is designed for, to protect things. In 2nd you should hit it around 105ish (thats in my ae101), so not extact, but will be sumwher around there.

It may bring the light on and log a code,
but it does not effect performance anyway,

and you can fit a speed cut defender to them easy as,
I have one on my AE111. According to the scan tool that I've had connected it put out a normal speed signal till 72kmh then it just keeps the signal at 72 untill you go below that again. Works perfect.

ahh, ok. Fair enough. I wasnt sure how the ecu would handle things if the speed stayed the same, and the revs and everything else increased, hence why i didnt think you could use one of those. What does the ecu sample the speed for? any clue?

not sure what you mean?

The frequency output from the speedo head I think is the answer you wanted.

Yes, but WHY does it care what the speed is? why is there a speed sensor hooked up to the ecu?

Is the speedo driven throught the ecu? no, wait. it can't be, because if it was your speed cut defender would keep the speed at 72km/h on the speedo if you went any higher. So that is the only reason i can see that the ecu would care about the speed, but snice thats not the case it leaves the question WHY DOES IT CARE?

Anybody know?

The speed sensor is used to control idle speed for one as with the sensor disconnected if you come to a complete stop in a hurry the ecu cannot stop the car from stalling,

ECU has SPD input for:
1. Speed limiter
2. RPM limiter is higher when car is moving
3. Controlling Auto box
4. Controlling VVT(i)(L) in some of the cars
5. Controlling EGR in some of the cars
6. Controlling ABS (separate ABS ECU)
7. Controlling SRS (separate SRS ECU)
8. Something else that I missed....

Thanks.

Ive noticed that the rev limited was lower when i wasn't moving... And does that mean speed limite removers don't work with autos? or what kind of effect can it have on abs?

Just wondering as my ae101 is manual and doesnt have abs, but im interested.
