I have replaced bearings with the engine in-situ many times, including on a 3s powered sw20 mr2. In my experience, if you know by oil pressure or noises from outside the car (ie without engine in bits) that theres a bearing problem, its often too late for a set of shells to cure the problem, but having said that, it wouldn't hurt to pull the pants off in place to have a look, just as long as you're prepared to pull the engine and grind the crank if you have to. Its also alot harder and far messier to replace the bearings under the car, its often just as fast and a hell of a lot cleaner and more pleasant to just pull the engine and do it 'properly'. The hard way is often the easy way .
good luck!
