SOMEBODY HELP ME!

Postby deinmuter » Tue Mar 15, 2005 11:18 pm

Hey my AE85 Trueno (in stock standard form) is in desperate need of some knowledged people who can guide me towards converting it to an AE86!
Im starting from scratch as well so I need ALL the parts!
If someone could be kind enough to compile a list of parts that i need to collect for this conversion, it would be much appreciated!

step 1: sell car.
step 2: buy AE86.

This can be very expensive converting it, unless you are willing to do all of the work yourself.

For example, there is a guy who tried to sell his AE85, which he had spent 15 grand on to get it to AE86 spec.

Of course this becomes significantly cheaper if you do the work yourself. :)

And after all this, it still wont have the value, or street cred of a geniune AE86. :P

Bah! But you probably know all of this of course.

To answer your question, I believe you need a new engine, gearbox, diff, springs shocks and struts.

You need to find a RWD 4AGE, (manifolds etc are different from FWD engine)
t50 gearbox,
dunno about the rest.
I thing there was a factory LSD for the AE86?

Im sure this topic has been covered several times before.

First up, how much do you know about cars? Would you be doing it your self, or sending it to a mechanic? If you can do it all your self it could be worth doing, but other wise I would just buy one all ready done.

Now, for the list. You will need these parts...

T50 gear box (with a A - T bell housing)
RWD 4age Engine
ae86 Front struts/brakes
ae86 Rear axle/diff and disk brakes
ae86 drive shaft
hydrolic clutch setup

I think thats most of it, I've probably missed a few things, but hey, it's a start :)

4AGE engine, with RWD water lines/intake manifold $600
Loom $50
ECU $80
electric fuel pump and associated wiring $100
T-50 with "A" bellhousing $300
hydraulic clutch setup $300
AE86/TE71 disc rear end $400
AE86 front struts w/brakes $try find some first!

Installation costs, for shit you can't do yourself, $2000
Then cert, add around $800..

Easy way to spend $4500 - $5000! Although, some of those costs are ballpark figures. Then add another few hundred for the bits and pieces you didn't think of.. kinda makes buying an AE86 in the first place the way to go! But, like the other AE85.5 owners on here, it just comes down to how much you love you car..

Hey guys thanks for your imput.

I know a fair bit about cars, but not really mechanically minded.

I know its easier buying an AE86 but believe me, I searched around but to no avail! Thats why i ended up buying this AE85 with hopes of upgrading it.

One more thing, I was told that because these models came out with 4AGE (in AE86 form) and there's no mods to do on the chassis so i didnt need to get it certed. Could anyone confirm whether thats true or not?

Also, am very keen to get started, just talked to Tama Autos who are able to fit my engine in for around $400 which I think is VERY reasonable, considering Ive been told they're the best people for a job like this.

If anyone can help me in sourcing these parts I need, it would be much appreciated!

That is not true sorry, you will need to have it certed. Somebody has been telling you things that are not correct.

You need cert for EVERYTHING!!

Say you don't get cert, insure it as a 1600cc Toyota Trueno. You get the mad dorifto going, slide into a parked 2005 BMW.. think, "Sweet as, insurance will cover it"..

Then spend the next 20 years paying it off at $20 a week, because as all modifications you've performed to the vehicle aren't certified to be engineered correctly and safely, and your insurance company won't touch you or the BMW with a barge pole..

Sucks, but its true, I've had this happen to a good mate of mine, except he hit a 2002 Honda Civic or something, which was new at the time.. I believe he's still paying it off. :(
