4efte Gearbox

Postby xl_rolla » Wed Mar 16, 2005 11:10 pm

Thinking of doing a 4efte conversion into my ee90 corolla and I know that the standard box isnt really going to take the beating it gets. Does the gearbox(c52??) from the 4efte bolt straight in?If not what mods would be needed to make it fit?
Thanks

Yes it will. You just need to bolt your mounts onto the box and your away laughing. The stock gearbox (c150) will actually last a fair while if your nice to it - especially in first. The rest of the gears you can rape as long as you avoid clutchless changes and flat shifting. In my first EP71 the stock box lasted well over a year before it smashed itself into lots of bits (actually the crown gear off the diff), but after that I killed them in rapid sucession untill I found a c52 unit. Moral of the story is, be nice to it and it'll last.

Cheers for that extremely helpful :)
Ive got a few questions I'm sure youll have a more educated answer to than I will
What brake upgrade would you recommend and what mods will be needed to fit them?
Whats the best fueling option, the vl pump, efi tank or just std?
Thanks alot

I think you and I both know whatll happen regardless of whether I say the box wont get a thrashing  and the c150 wont like the outcome!

Ha, yeah I understand with the gearbox being thrashed. I used to flat shift and sidestep the clutch quite alot with my first c150 and was surprised how long it lasted. The shortest time on lasted was a few day from memory.

For simplicity I'd go with the GT starlet suspension and brake setup. The bonus is that everything bolts in, and you've got a wide range of parts available (ie rotors and composite pads) to help improve breaking once you start to mod the 4e.

If you can, just run a EFI tank. Standard EP82 pump will be alright for starters then just get a walbro or something. You can run a surge tank setup but there is a bit of pipe work to be done. Not impossible by any means thou.

i had plans on converting my nana ep80 to silvertop with c52.. problem is the A series c52 uses different upper mount as the E series (im sure you know all about this stu).. ive heard you use an adapter plate to mate the A series block to E series C52 gearbox.. is it cheap and easy to do? can you use 4age clutch? have you got any adapter plates or templates laying around? :P

What do you reckon will be cheaper buying the parts or a whole donor car?Any idea on price?

xl_rolla :

Parts are becoming hard to find so best bet may be to find a smashed starlet and convert everything over. You can TRY sourcing all the bits but it'll be easy having everything there instead of having to source every last bit. Engine, Loom and ECU would be a good start. Retain your existing box, shafts and brakes for a short period then upgrade when you find them.

MetalupYoAss :

I spent too much time and effort figuring it all out just to tell everyone how its done. Sorry bro.

Thats what I was thinking itd probably be easier to get a donor car for a little extra and save a lot of trouble with waiting on parts and forgetting parts and the kind of thing thats likely to happen when getting stuff bit by bit. What do you reckon it will put out after conversion etc. And I'm assuming the starlet fuel tank will bolt up fine?

Not sure about the starlet fuel tank, might fit but havent tried so can't confirm. Just take a sledge hammer to the floor to create space :D

Put out? I assume your meaning hp figures, well its all weighed on what other mods you do along with the conversion. They're 100kw at the fly from factory but it all depends on their condition, boost, turbo etc. Hard call to make.

I know nothing about these adaptors but what I can tell you is: If you use the 4AG cltch it will eat the release bearing shaft as it is too long. Using this adapter might space it a bit and make it possible but I doubt it.

PS: This isnt what ive read, it cost me a gearbox to find this out.
