Rebuilt or reconditioned?, 2 very different meanings. Brand new condition wouldbe reconditioned and cost you a fortune, rebuilt is the replace the synchros and hub(if worn)

well, the levins / truenos wear out first to second and second to third gear syncromesh.

so replacing all of the syncromesh will be what he wants, not much else.

it will feel clunky, so he wants it stopped, thus a *rebuild*.

That was the part I was replying to, I know the problems with toyota boxes, but he seems under the impression that a rebuild is a recondition.

Seems you dont know the difference or dont read things properly

only if ya hard on it, 3rd gear wears, but 2nd only wears through miss use

cheapest option: 2nd hand box can be yours from as cheap as $70 bucks privtley or $150-250 with warranty from trade

next: rebuild, replace worn parts. may turn into a recondition. if it just needs a coupla synchros then your looking at $1-200 bucks for parts.

dearest: recon. if replacing all bearings and synchros then expect to pay between $600-1000. im gussing on the labour though

I got a quote to do mine, $800+ GST with a good discount through a guy that does work for my work.

THat is only replacing bearings and seals.

I got a quote for a second hand gearbox, $275 all up.

Was in good condition, and was, as you can see, cheap as chips, and I can do the work myself.

Toyota quoted me $300 for the input bearing alone

Is a gearbox rebuild (ie strip it dowm and install new syncros, seals and possibly bearings) much of a major to do in a garage without specialist tools?
Ive got a press but is there anything else needed?
