Engine temp = normal, Radiator = steams + spits coolent?

Postby ThoughT ExperimenTs » Sun Mar 20, 2005 3:01 am

Hi
I recently bougth an ST182,

I've noticed that after I drive it steam comes out aorund my headlights from the radiator and that it's coming from the radiator cap which is also spitting out green coolent everywhere. I'm not sure if the car is overheatign or not because the engine doesn't seem hot, and the gague on the dash sists at half way....

any ideas?

Replace the cap and then run the engine and look for anymore areas where it leaks. Its probably is not overheating yet if all the fluid levels are ok, but its a potential major in the waiting!. if you do overheat it, that could lead to warping, cracking and all manner or problems.
Caps are cheap as chips and if you need to radiators dont cost a lot to re-core either.

might be a bhg, and its over pressurising your coolant system.

not good.

But as said start off with cheap stuff, like the cap and checking hoses etc.

ANd hope that it aint a bhg

How amn I soposed to know when the fan goes? It never goes, I noticed when I sat in trafic the temp gage actually gies up, then goes down when I start driving. Check fuse, see if the fans pluged in? woudl this be the problem?

Could be a problem, might pay to check things with fan. I'm assuming you actually have an overflow bottle attacked to the radiator?

doesnt seem to over flow into it though

also the pipe from the engine to the top of the radiator is of a 1990 - 1992 mitsi glant dohc 2L, is this going to be a problem?

You might have a buggered radiator cap, or the wrong one. If you get excessive pressure in the radiator then its supposed to open up the hole that goes to the overflow bottle so you would expect to see the coolant coming out there rather than from the radiator cap. Something is wrong if your fan NEVER goes though. The entire point of it is to prevent overheating

ThoughT ExperimenTs: You may need a new fan switch. The little green plug that goes into the water out the right side of the head. Other than that check fuses, check battery and check contacts.

You should also hope the bubbling out of the radiator IS a blown head gasket and not a cracked head

If the fans on your car have not been working its likely to be a blown head gasket. Why? When the engine over heats it warps and damages the seal between the head and block.

you can also easily make up a fan switch yourself.. just a +ve from battery, to a switch then to fan. ezpz!

The engine temp gague is normal though so the engine should be fine, just a problem with the radiator cap? IUf I go see toyota albany are they likly to give some advice after lookinbg at it? and if the head gasket was blowen wouldn't I have a lot of smoke?

Fan switch and water temperature are different.

That's an incredibly dumb $&#$% idea. The retard who owned my bro's XA before him did this, and this number of times the engine has almost overheated as a result  At some point or another, you're eventually going to forget about it. Then you're in a world of shit.

ThoughT ExperimenTs - a new radiator cap will only cost a few bucks, and will tell you straight away if that's the problem, or if you should keep looking. It's amazing what a difference a radiator cap can make 8O

Went to Toyota North Shore, great service there. The guy came out and had a look at the radiator, there isn't a problem with the fan or anything, just tht the radiator needs draining and fulling again with new (not rusty) coolent and that it probably needs a new radiator cap too - couldn't take it off at the time because of the pressure.

Getting there was a scary adventure, I had to do a U-turn and after I had done it the accelerator didn't work at all, so I crawlled along in D until I could pull over at wash world. The cable had some how detached from the brake pedal, which didn't take long to find out and put back on again.

Anyway back to repco, the radiator cap didn't fit (was recomended to try a different type - good seriuve today there too :D )
