Postby smitty21 » Mon Mar 21, 2005 9:13 pm

I have a relitively standard 4age Red Top. Can sumone tell me wot sort of power output the engine has, and wot sort of cheap mods can b dun to increase power? And how dus this engine handle a supercharger addition? how much work is involved in it? :D

Have a search for some of those answer. You'll need to say how much money you have to throw at it to see what can be done really.

101Kw standard. which is pritty bloody good. DOHC Turbo familias make that standard well. start by moving the battery to the boot
and then get some piping from mitre 10 or sumthing and put a pod filter near the front or down low. 2.25 inch exhaust straight thru. bout $700 right there and thats a good starting point. extractors make a small differance for bout $350-500. then new sparks, leads and timings. hell syntetic oils is always a help. turbo/supercharger will cost you a few thou

Parts wise you will need items such as:
-supercharger (dont quote me on prices but trademe had one for 300)
-throttle body ($?)
-piping ($?)
-ECU (at least 200+)
-intercooler (stock 4agze one is cheap, like some go for $50)

and depending on boost/power levels you may need to look at :
-upgraded injectors ($? maybe from a 4agze)
-new pistons (or maybe thicker headgasket to lower the compression ratio? its what the N/A Hondas do sometimes when they go turbo)
-gearbox? (some expert will correct me if im wrong :)

Then add in the labour cost..unless your gonna do it yourself.
Realistically, why go through all that hassle for an engine that only puts out around 100kw at the wheels?

With the amount of time and money of converting to a supercharged engine, you might aswell convert it to turbo. Ask yourself WHY you want a supercharged engine? Ask anyone whose gone from S/C to turbo and they will probably advise you that its not really worth converting a 4age to a 4agze. I have a S/C with a 14psi pulley kit and it produces about 20kw less power at the wheels than my turbo 4agte at 11psi.

There is no point changing to synthetic oil at all. Probably worth going new plugs and leads if the old ones are tired, no advantage to expensive platinum/iridium plugs other than the fact that they last longer and you can wank on too everyone about how you bought expensive plugs for no good reason.

Turbo is a much better option that supercharger if you're wanting to make more top end power. Supercharged is great if you want the instant power/torque down low and as soon as you plant it, but it tends to die off up. I would have to say turbo is more fun, but thats a personal preference.

If you're going to go supercharged (or turbo for that matter) then you're going to need a fair bit of cash handy. Other than the previously mentioned costs of buying the turbo/supercharger and associated plumbing you're also going to need injectors (buy my GTiR ones), exhaust manifold if going turbo, an ECU to control things (4AGZE one if you want to do it on a budget, remember you need things to control the electromagnetic clutch on the Toyota superchargers), replacement lower compression pistons if you're going for any sort of high boost application, an intercooler (stock ones are arse, look for a VR4 job) plus all the little things you wouldn't think about for a turbo such as oil/water feed lines, any gauges you may want to keep an eye on things, blow off valve if you want one, exhaust modifications for the new manifold (if going turbo) etc etc etc

If you want to go SC then buy a halfcut with the ECU, loom and all the other bits you need. It'll be cheaper and easier than buying parts and modifying what you already have.

If you wanna go turbo then just go nuts buying the parts you need, but dont forget about injectors and engine management

That is correct..

U would be wasting your time if u have the one with the tvis. Because they r pretty slow engines.
