4agze head bolt trouble

Postby crispy'86 » Fri Mar 25, 2005 10:30 pm

undoing the head bolts on the 4agze one of the bolts didn't undo. The socket slipped around on the bolt head effectively rounding off the bolt head but no damage to socket. I was thinking of 1; welding a socket to the bolt head with mig welder and try undoing it and/or 2; heat the bolt up with gas and try undoing it but may put too much heat on the head bolt and surrounding area of head.

Any ideas anyone?

yea they should of made those head bolts single hex.

should try vice grips first, tho chances are you wont crack it with them.

but tacking a nut should do the trick

bit risky drilling the head with the small gap u have to work with if i slip i'mnot going to be happy/ not to mention popular with guy i'm doing it for.

I may try tacking something to the head first then drill it if i get stuck

If you drill off the head, you won't need to drill it entirly all the way off, just nearly all the way then knock off the head, then you can remove the head past the bolt, and after that all you need to do is undo it with your fingers as there is no more torque loading on it.

Yeah i've done that before so not too worried about it not working out. Things you have to do to disassemble things.

smaller socket,
i cant for the life of me remember the size the normlly are, but if you have a decent socket, bash it over making sure you line it up first,

other wise if its accessible put a larger nut over the bolt head and weld it, make sure you weld it enough, a simple tack wont be enough. then just use a socket on the nut to undo it.
i wouldnt weld a socket to it, mainly because its a waste of a socket,

nor would i heat it, you dont want to put unwanted direct heat in to the head being alloy and all,
if its possible heat the block were the bolt goes in, but id probably try drill the head off the bolt first.
