cambelt replacement instructions for 86-92 4AGE

Removal

1. Support front of Engine and remove Engine Mounting. (if necessary)
2. Remove Spark Plugs and Leads.
3. Remove Auxiliary Drive Belts.
4. Remove Cooling Fan and Fluid Coupling.
5. Remove Water Pump Pulley.
6. Remove Upper Timing Belt Cover.
7. Rotate Engine Clockwise to TDC Compression #1 Cylinder
8. Ensure that the Timing Marks are aligned.
9. Remove the Oil Filler Cap and ensure that the Camshaft Notch is visible through Hole.
10. Remove Crankshaft Pulley Bolt.

11. Using a suitable puller, remove Crankshaft Pulley.
12. Remove Lower Timing Belt Covers.
13. Remove Timing Belt Guide from Crankshaft.
14. Loosen Timing Belt Tensioner Lock Bolt.
15. Push Timing Belt Tensioner as far to left as possible and temporarily tighten Bolt.
16. Remove Timing Belt and Tensioner.
17. Remove the Valve Covers.
18. Hold the Camshaft by the Hexagon and Remove the Camshaft Sprocket Bolts.
19. Note position of Camshaft Sprocket Knock Pins.

20. Remove the Camshaft Sprockets.
21. Remove the Crankshaft Sprocket.

Installation




Ensure Engine is cold before installing Timing Belt.

1. Check Timing Belt Tensioner for smoothness of operation.
2. Ensure that the free length of the Timing Belt Tensioner Spring does not exceed 43.5 mm.
3. Refit the Crankshaft Sprocket.
4. Refit the Camshaft Sprockets.
5. Hold the Camshaft by the Hexagon and Torque the Camshaft Sprocket Bolts.
6. Refit the Valve Covers.
7. Refit Timing Belt Tensioner and Spring.
8. Push Timing Belt Tensioner as far to left as possible and temporarily tighten Bolt.

9. Ensure that the Timing Marks are aligned.
10. Fit Timing Belt in the following order:
Crankshaft
Exhaust Camshaft
Inlet Camshaft
Tensioner
11. Loosen Timing Belt Tensioner Bolt and allow Tensioner to tension the Timing Belt.
12. Temporarily fit the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt.
13. Rotate Engine Two Complete Revolutions Clockwise.
14. Ensure that the Timing Marks are aligned.
15. Torque Timing Belt Tensioner Bolt
16. Check Timing Belt Deflection where indicated on diagram is 4 mm with a 2 Kg load.

17. Remove Crankshaft Pulley Bolt.
18. Refit Timing Belt Guide to Crankshaft. (Cup side outwards)
19. Refit Lower Timing Belt Cover.
20. Refit Timing Belt Pulley and Torque Timing Belt Pulley Bolt.
21. Refit Upper Timing Belt Cover.
22. Refit Water Pump Pulley.
23. Refit Cooling Fan and Fluid Coupling.
24. Refit Auxiliary Drive Belts.
25. Refit Engine Mounting. (if removed)
26. Refit Spark Plugs and Leads.



Tightening Torques

Camshaft Sprocket Bolts 40 to 53 Nm
Crankshaft Pulley Bolt 108 to 207 Nm
Timing Belt Tensioner Bolt 30 to 44 Nm



R&R Time

Corolla 2.2 Hours
Air Conditioning Add 0.1 Hours
Power Steering Add 0.2 Hours

MR2 1.6 Hours
Air Conditioning Add 0.4 Hours
Power Steering Add 0.2 Hours

Why remove the Crank and Cam sprockets?

remove them,
check the cambelt tensioner,
then refit them?

Why?

Sounds like it's just typed out of a book to me.
