Thats easy, no change of ownership/registration without proof of insurance.

I agree with the learner/restricted having a less powerful car, but at the end of the day, you can still hit that lamppost just as hard at 70km/h, wether you're in a 220hp GTSt or a 4K DX. I say, defensive driving courses should be compulsary. My parents made me do one, it makes you far more aware of what you should and shouldn't do on the roads..

i learnt SFA in my D-driving course, any course thats not hands on is not going to acheive much.

limiting CC ratings isnt the way to go, 2L telstar vs 1600honda vtec.....
there are too many exceptions and different ways of making horsepower that a system like this would be unrealistic.

Same with the turbo rule, what if i wanted to own a diesel turbo? maybe a 4wd or the like to tow a boat or trailer or whatever?

Compulsory insurance has it downside,
sure they 17yo wanting to keep his WRX/EVO will pay 2k a year for insurance, but to pay for this, what will he do???

The next time he needs a set of tires "well i have to pay $$$ insurance so these budget re-treads stretched will have to do instead of the recommended, better tires......"

This happens to a point where he will have insurance, but his car will end up unsafe....

But thats the idea, to keep 17yo kids out of powerful cars such as EVO's and WRX's, as they can't really afford to keep covering the costs of them.

To be honest, I don't think anyone should invest money in powerful cars unless they're financially secure.

in our day cars r alot more powerfull, yes they have better brakes, suspension
but what good is this if you dont no how to use it proberly

im allfor driver training " practicle not theroy" they just started this in oz and has had a wicked response

i think it includes braking at high speeds in the wet and around wet cnrs etc just simple stuff that every1 gets wrong

driving to most people does not come naturaly it has to be learnt

It sucks yes but at the end of the day what can you do? It takes one person to ruin it (or it was a few in this case) for everybody in a short period of time and a lifetime to repair the damage done on the image. Or is the damage done inrepairable?
I would liek to think not but reality of it is cause there still those same ones ruining it for everybody...

AMI is bullshit for insurance they tried to charge me $175 per month for my 1.3 corolla 8O it has a few mods but nt enought to warrant that price. And they have given me an excess of $1500 which means if my car gets nicked i will get nuthing and if i crash i have to pay the 1st $1500. Even tho im only 17 it shldnt make that much difference, they would even insure me for an FXGT.

State etc etc as soon as i said 17, corolla, sounds, mags they said see you later. :x

i dont think there is a problem. people die on our roads all the time, some boyracers. its just that its easier to isolate the boyracers and concentrate on them as the problem. but if you looked at how many people die on our roads each year, and how many were "boyracer" related, wheres the problem?

There's something to be said about all this... I just don't know what it is.
Here's my suggestion:

* Raise the age (17 - Heck looking back, at 17, mentally I don't think I was really ready to drive).
* Make the tests harder.
* Some form of compulsory practical driving training. Skid control, emergency action, first aid, etc.
* Follow up test whenever you renew your licence.
* Insurance linked to WOF/Registration. Don't have them, can't get insurance. Perhaps have a basic insurance linked to the rego of the car. Got a rego? Got basic insurance. (I haven't really thought much about this one). (Would help if insurance companies got on board with realistic insurance policies...)
* Limit car ownership choices on restricted licences. (sub 1.8L??, can't own a car on learners). I know that there are cars out there which can easily defeat this, but ya just can't cover everything, so something is better than nothing.

i've read through 4 pages of blatent drivel to find this post. awesome.

a new poll: how many people have heard of/ or been on a Prodrive course?
they're run all the time, and if you think you're a too good a driver, ask the local car club guys (who have raced for years) if they have benefitted from it............of course they bloody did.

i wouldn't consider myself to be a great driver, but watching some of these young dickheads on the roads makes me want to round the dickheads up and kill them before they take someone elses life.

anyone can drive a car fast...anyone.
not everyone can drive fast safely.

You honestly believe prodrive would lower road deaths? Get real mate, and you have the audacity to call the rest of this thread drivel.

Learning how to control a car in a skid has 0% to do with almost all accidents, which are due entirely to ignorance, speed, idiocy, and often alcohol. Very rarely could an accident be avoided with better skid control, if at the end of the day someone is busy changing their radio, or is half asleep.

X - you are in fact a twat.

you have the audacity to say learning to control a skid has 0% to do with almost all accidents.

that would rate as close to being the dumbest thing you have said ever!! these been so many......very tough one to judge.

what age did you admit to being? 19 or something? once you have a few of lifes experiences behind you, reuturn for comment.

I have been through Prodrive both as a student and also many times as an instructor. Despite what Dr-X says (I assume he was asleep or is commenting on something he never attended) it is not about skid control. The key point is being aware of your surroundings and how a car reacts. Many young (and not so young) drivers have absolutely no clue about the physics of driving a car, using peripheral vision, contact patch with the road, weight transfer etc etc. Put people in a car and show them and let them experience it for themselves and 99% of the time they will come out better drivers. Dr-X must be the 1%.

unfortunately, i can't comment on the content of the Prodrive course as it never existed when i got my licence.

i was , however supposed to be an instructor for it , but was away when the course was run. all the other guys, who, i might add, are experienced racecar drivers, stated they all learned a bit on the course.
just goes to show.........

there it is!!!! the biggest thing that ppl miss out on in nz.....
no idea at all.

iv always stated that the best way to learn to drive is in a paddock in a shitter... car control, or lack of it is a big big problem in nz.
and if you understand car control you understand how hard it can be to correct certain situations... so you drive more apporiatly for the conditons.... i find it really simple.... whats hard about it??

beasty and fangsport have good points there...

Put me down for another you are wrong vote:

I've seen it many a time on roads in the wet, people dont realise the car in front is stopping in front of them until its too late for their skills - they jump on the brake and lock it up and at the very worse swerve right into the oncoming traffic and cause a fatal accident

When i ever am in that situation i seem to be able to stop and if i dont think i can i'll aim for the left shoulder on the road rather than going right.
I've stopped in far shorter distances than others ive seen in the same situations due to things like dogs running out etc......

I have only done 2 of those driving corses but i felt they made me more aware of my surroundings when in a car, im 110% sure i could benefit from another one

OK, so I may have started another "dr-X, you are a bean head" war of words, but in my opinion there a two facets of skid control, and that is why i used this instead of the term, car control.......My bad.

To me skid control is driving and such a manner that you don't unnecessarily put the car into a skid through excessive braking(ie lock-up ), over/understeer during cornering, and excessive loss of traction in slippery conditions etc. the other facet of skid control , is knowing how to react in any of those circumstances.
