4agte blue/oil smoke

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Wed Mar 30, 2005 4:14 pm

I thought the smoke was black because it uses heaaaaps of fuel, but got it tested yesterday to see if the afm could be adjusted for better economy.

The mechanic said he couldnt get a reading for fuel from the exhaust becuase its blowing blue smoke (oil).

I've just done another compression test and it has consistent 165psi each cylinder (with engine at operating temp). I also took off the pipe from I/C to Intake and there doesnt seem to be any sign of oil inside the pipe. When i had the turbo off a while ago it did have a little shaft play (up/down but didnt check back/forwards).

Im guessing turbo seals but it has also been suggested the valve stem seals could be buggered...

What else should i be checking to find where/how the oil is getting into the combustion cycle?

Thanks 8)

Turbo oil seals cause smoke after a little while when the car is idling.

Stem seals leak when the throttle is closed for a while(going down a big hill) then when you push the accelerator the oil burns and smoke comes out.

When does your car smoke?

Other things to check are:

Let the car sit for a while then pull off inlet and exhaust pipes to turbo and look and see if there is any oil sitting inside the turbo.

Pull off the inlet and exhaust manifolds and look at the valve stems to see if any oil is dripping down.

Are you running a restictor in your oil feed?

How large is the oil return?

Got a breather pipe running off ya crankcase? two even?

When does your car smoke? Under heavy acceleration and also i noticed it smoked while engine braking down a long hill

Are you running a restictor in your oil feed? Its got a braided hose and the only place that there could be a restictor is the threaded piece right on the turbo (this car wasnt built by me, previous owner). Its a very thin hose... i'll check tomorrow.

How large is the oil return? Rubber hose roughly 1inch diameter, going to the highest possible point on the sump so it cant be oil flowing back. Id assume so anyway.

Got a breather pipe running off ya crankcase? two even? Theres only one from the cam cover, thats all ive noticed so far.
