Swapping ae101 gearbox

Postby trueno93 » Thu Mar 24, 2005 6:00 pm

Hey there
I know this has probably been covered before but ill ask anyway. What exactly is involved in swapping over the gearbox in a ae101 silvertop 4age? Is it just a matter of unbolting the old one and shoving the new one straight in? Would it be recommended to swap the driveshafts etc at the same time? thanks alot

I havent done that exact operation, but I'd assume it'd be similar to most FWD setups. To over simplify it, yes, it would be "just a matter of unbolting the old one and shoving the new one straight in", but of course it's never that simple, especially at home with no pit or hoist.

There's no real reason to repalce the shafts at the same time.

if its another box off the same car then yes

it is easier to drop the whole motor out the bottom though (have done a clutch on a 101 and didnt, it was a pain in the ass

i assume your talking a straight manual to manual or auto to auto swap. if your talking auto to manual then no it wont be you will need a lot more gear eg clutch parts, pedal box etc etc etc

cheers

if youv got a hoist, leave the engine in easy as.

even without a hoist its easy, unless its an auto! (which its not)
the rear mount is a pita. you have to undo the mount from the cross member, and take the mount to box bracket out to get the mount out.
while you have the mount out knoct the studs out and weld nuts to the mount. then use bolts up from the bottom instead of the studs. makes it a lot easier! youll see what i mean when you get there....

only other bastard thing is the bracket for the r/h axle hanger.
gotta take it off the shaft to get it back on and they can rust up. so lotsa wd40 and a hammer!!

but yeah pretty straight forward. a good mech can do it in 2-3 hours

just pay extra care to all plugs abd hoses, some will be a pain if you dont notice them unplugged till its all together....

When putting it back together (assuming your keeping the engine in the bay) find some bolts that have the same thread size as the bolts that hold the gbox to the engine and cut off the head and put a couple of bolts on the engine so that the gbox just slips over the bolts and onto the engine

It makes it a hell of a lot easier than stretching over the engine bay trying to line up the gbox to go onto the engine
