Turbo hoses

Postby Andy from the block » Wed Apr 20, 2005 1:31 am

Recently I had a turbo that blew a seal and leaked oil.

I have bought a 2nd hand turbo, and want to ensure I give it the best
chance of survival in terms of correct oil and water circulation.

Was wondering what kinda temperatures the hoses (oil/water) on the turbo get up to?
Are rubber hoses fine? or would they deteriarate over time and constant exposure to high heat?
Are silicon hoses worth upgrading to?
What kinda hoses have you got? how have they held up over the years?

I was thinking of replacing my oil drain hose with clear hose from bunnings warehouse,
would this be able to take the heat? :?:

please og please dont use garden hose for your oil feed or oil drain!

Do it once, do it right - cost you about $100 to make up a braided line for the oil feed, and the oil return line can vary depending on what you need. The line itself is not that expensive - its the damn fitttings that cost!

providing you dont buy from cardwells racing (earls range) brass fittings are quite cheap.

i have used heater hose for a oil return on one of my cars and didnt have any problems. only problem i have heard of using something soft is that it colapses and sticks to itself = not good , but id say itd have to be something very weak to do that.

for the water lines i used double insulated HI-TEMP silcone hose (push lock) from ENZED worked out at about $18 per metre. works wonders and rated to about 180 degrees ambient.

I tried using all sorts for the drain, make sure you use a larg diameter tube to allow proper draining. I ended up making one out of steel tubing because everythin else i tried melted :( mind you my drain goes *through* my manifolds :?
Horsepower is NOT proportional to the cross sectional area of your exhaust tip.

andy the hoses i used are excellent quality, dont replace them

the drain hose is 3/4 hydralink push lock hose,
the feed is a 2 layer internal wire braid,

the water hose i used is fuel hose, excellent quality, and from memory 5/16 id.
