Servicing is cheap if you have a brain and a set of spanners. If it needs major mechanical repair then a decent second hand turbo motor is only $900.
Fuel can be free if I use a waste product at work and a little uppercylinder lube for the pump.
The car saves me around $25 a week all up if I buy diesel.

I remember reading some car mag, may have been AA or autocar? They did comparisons and most diesels worked out costing more, the costs also included the xtra you generally pay for a diesel vehicle to start with.
For the general joe public who doesnt know what a spanner is and gets the car serviced when they should it apparently costs more
IMO from owning a 89 corolla 5 speed 1.8l diesel wagon, if you can service them yourself, Get cheap filters/oil/sparkplugs etc they are a lot cheaper - mind you RUC were alot cheaper back then

Yeah thats true but they also earn a better packet than us. My mate over there gets 20 Quid and hour and thats like over $50 an hour after conversion so they still get a good deal.

true but keep in mind that most things over there cost more than here, food housing etc thats the downside to earning more money over there

You can take certain steps to minimise the amount of RUC you want to pay. Not advisable for the majority tho.
