Engine has done 393,000kms. Unsure if any previous owners have done any engine work on it.
When I got it about 70,000kms ago it used not much oil at all, possibly 500ml~1L between oil changes (10,000kms). In the last 20,000kms it's been alot worse. I replaced the headgasket and had the head refaced at 370,000kms, which bumped the compression from 185psi on all cylinders (hot) up to 205~225psi over the 4 cylinders again when hot. I haven't done a compression check within the last 12 months or so, so would be useful to know what it's at now.
Because of the head work, and no subsequent work to the bottom end, it's caused the rings to deteriate, and one of the big end bearings is a little rattly under load at 3000rpm. It doesn't really smoke until it's under heavy load and at high rpm - even then it's usually cloudy grey smoke like a diesel almost. I have yet to see it smoke blue smoke, but possibly because that's hard to detect.
I have serviced it often, oil changes every 10,000kms since owning it, and recently down to every 5,000kms now. Has a new air and fuel filter. Spark plugs are 8,000kms old and the electrodes are still nice and square. I plan on doing a rebuild before the 400,000kms mark or mid this year whichever suits. This will include but not limited to; new premium rings and a bore rehone, new bearings and crank if needed, all new seals and gaskets, new pistons if needed, new oil pump if needed, balance shaft removal and a new clutch. I just want to get the carby sorted before I do the motor.
Thing is, it will sometimes run nice and smooth when it wants to, but other times it will bog down, have hardly any torque around 2000~3000rpm and feels strained. Sometimes wont be smooth when accelerating either, seems notchy sometimes. You can feel on the pedal where the vacuum secondary opens.
I pretty much just want to ditch this carby altogether as it seems like junk . When I was at the carby rebuilders, he was dismantling a HiAce carby which happened to be an Aisan as well. Looked like a flash version of mine (ie bigger barrels, more advanced design). Just wondering if any of the Aisans fitted to the Toyotas were quite good, and if anyone could recommend a certain one.
LOUD NOISES!!!
