K series gearbox swaps

Postby bad20v » Thu Apr 28, 2005 12:37 pm

As some people might know, Ive got a KP60 starlet with a 2K and a 4spd gearbox. Ive just purchased a KE70 wagon, for the 4K and 5spd gearbox. I know that the K50 box will need modification to fit in properly, but what I want to know is,
Will the driveshaft splines match up correctly?
Which gearbox has closer ratio's, the K50 5spd or the standard 4spd?
Need to know this before we start work on it.

Cheers

Greg

Hehe, check your other post. Driveshaft is straight fit.

As for gear ratios, never noticed any major differences in the first 4 gears at all.

I have personally swapped a Starlet from factory 5 speed to KE20 4 speed to KE70 5 speed using the same driveshaft. The drivhaft was also tested in a TE71 20 spline T50. All are the same. If it was originally an auto the spline is supposed to be different (have not confirmed myself) but the manual will be the same. There are two different length manual driveshafts depending what diff is in the car, be wary of this if you go to the stronger U code diff or you will damage the rear of the gearbox.

Well Ive got:

2 x engines : 4K & 2K - Im using the 4K
2 x gearboxes: 4spd from KP60 starlet & 5spd from KE70 Wagon
2 x driveshafts: from as above
2 x diffs: from as above, but the starlet one is locked.

What do suggest would be the best combination? Note: I will be racing on a tight, twisty tarmac surface.

Personally I just want to swap the engines over, but my brother who is part owner in it wants to do all sorts of extra stuff and is keen on the 5spd. I dont know why, we proberly wont even use 5th gear!

Personally I would keep the 4 speed, not worth the effort of swapping for your purposes.
4k - 4 speed - Starlet diff
Diff wise I would look for the U code diff from a 83-84 drop hatch Starlet, and matching shorter driveshaft. Once you blow the locker you can then just whack the whole setup in with the nice low ratio wagon diff head (locked up if you prefer too). Sell or trade the 5 speed for extra funds for a better carb, extractors etc.
